    Yesterday we released our 4th?annual Mission Report — we have a lot to be proud of in 2024 — the validation of our net-zero goals by SBTi; a number of awards such as the Reuters Sustainability Trailblazer Award and 5x Winner of Best Place to Work; our partnership with Dr. Jane Goodall; growing Fairmined gold purchases by?364%; committing over?$443,000 to nonprofit partners; increasing employee giving back and volunteer hours by?62%; and a whopping 73% of our employees are women. ? It’s hard being a nonprofit nowadays. Last year, we witnessed firsthand the profound impact the Brilliant Earth Foundation is having on artisanal mining communities in Tanzania, Kenya, and Peru. We appreciate our grant partners for the work they are doing on our behalf, now especially — Pact, Cristina Maria Villegas, Esther Njunge, Pure Earth, Jennifer Marraccino, Cabanillas France, Rodrigo Velarde, Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM), Gina D'Amato, Marcin Piersiak, Laura Galvis, Gem Legacy, Rachel (Dery) Merisheki, GG. ? Our annual Mission Report is two-fold, it is all the hard work that takes place throughout the year to accomplish our Mission Goals, and then it is the process of writing/designing a Report to showcase those accomplishments. While some companies may be reconsidering certain aspects of their approach, this doesn't indicate a full retreat from all?sustainability commitments. "I haven't seen wholesale abandonment... Rather, companies are focusing their efforts on the things they can actually affect." The business case for sustainability remains compelling — from operational efficiency and cost savings to maintaining competitive advantage and meeting customer expectations. Smart companies understand that sustainability is integral to long-term success, regardless of short-term political headwinds.     I feel for businesses right now, even when I'm personally disappointed by some choices. Everyone is uncertain of what's next. No one wants to stick their head out of the foxhole, so they dig in deeper... What I'm seeing: ?????? Organizations rolling back or "rebranding" diversity initiatives, carefully calculating which employees to feature and worrying about the messages their visuals might send ?? Companies reassessing sustainability goals aimed at mitigating climate change — some revisions were genuinely needed, but no one's getting a gold star for effort these days, so few are willing to lead ?? The whack-a-mole game with shareholder resolutions — trying to get ahead by addressing any language that might be "misinterpreted," hoping to resolve concerns before they escalate ?? Lawyers in one ear, the social media universe of customers and activists in the other — a constant tug-of-war ?? European requirements to disclose ESG metrics (plus California, and more coming...) versus states actively punishing companies for considering ESG factors At Ideas On Purpose, we're helping clients thread this needle daily. We see the challenges clearly and understand the impossible balancing act many are facing. In this environment, communicating with clarity and authenticity becomes more important than ever. Silence might seem safe, but strategic, thoughtful communication that acknowledges the challenges while focusing on business fundamentals builds trust.
