Our team had a very successful week at World Urban Forum 12 Egypt! The IDEAMAPS Network had a track going through several events with an emphasis on co-creation of inclusive data ecosystems (stay tuned for more reports!). Among them, a personal highlight was the strong resonance of the training I facilitated on "Inclusive Data Innovations for Mapping Urban Deprived Areas, Peripheral Territories, and Informal Settlements". We had two inspiring opening speeches: Robert Ndugwa from UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme), a long-time collaborator, kicked us off by emphasising the importance of data for SDG 11. Guilherme Sim?es - National Secretary for the Peripheries of Brazil Ministry of Cities, emphasised the importance of participatory data for his pioneering work programme to address the Brazilian state's historic debt with urban peripheries. We then showcased three real-world cases of the inclusive use of data innovations: 1) nicera wanjiru gave us a fantastic presentation on the pioneering grassroots Community Mappers initiative she leads in Nairobi Kenya as part of SDI. (Slum Dwellers International) Know Your City 2.0, emphasising the importance of amplifying the voice of communities in data, which was made particularly important in the aftermath of recent floods in Nairobi and the diverging narratives and numbers presented in the media. 2) Camila Leal and Talita Stael Costa then presented the "Mapa das Periferias" project of Brazil's National Secretary for the Peripheries which I had the pleasure to advise and that is elevating community participatory mapping as public policy, enabling more than 16.4 million people living in favelas in Brazil to take control on how their vulnerabilities - and importantly, their assets and "potentialities" are made visible to public policy. 3) Dana R Thomson, Monika Kuffer and I presented our IDEAMAPS Network approach and our IDEAMAPS Data Ecosystem project (funded by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation) to co-create urban data ecosystems that are grounded in urban communities in coalition with city decision-makers, and urban data scientists to address urban injustices. We had a full room, with high-level participants who made strong contributions to the debate on inclusive data, among them colleagues with longstanding interactions such as Joe Muturi, Pete Masters, Mikkel Aagaard Harder alongside new connections: Sophie Naue, Jorge Mariano Rossi,Rogerio Gutierrez Gama, among many others! I was also thrilled to speak at the session led by Bunmi Alugbin on the vibrant city of Lagos, discussing our project's contribution to redefine how slums and informal settlements are depicted in data to reveal specific priorities. Finally, I was pleased to hear that Anacláudia Rossbach called at WUF for the establishment of a global coalition for urban data and I look forward to the next steps: our IDEAMAPS Network and the Urban Big Data Centre will be pleased to contribute actively to this vision.

Integrating our silo-ed approaches to "slum" mapping to generate routine, accurate maps of deprived urban areas at scale
关于我们
The IDEAMAPS Network was launched in 2020 by the IDEAMAPS Project with funding from a UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) grant. The network and project both grew out of workshops hosted by the African Population and Health Research Center, Slum Dwellers International – Kenya, and UN-Habitat in Nairobi in 2019. The IDEAMAPS Network welcomes field-based community mappers, local governments, academics, and data scientists to collaborate and map deprived urban areas routinely and accurately at scale in low- and middle-income countries. The aim of this network is to develop and maintain an Integrated DEprived Area MAPping System (IDEAMAPS) that leverages the strengths of our current silo-ed approaches to "slum" area mapping.

The IDEAMAPS Data Ecosystem Platform is a new digital tool that presents data about different types of urban deprivation and assets. Our mission in developing this tool is to foster positive exchanges of data between urban scientists, communities and policymakers, helping to overcome barriers in city planning, neighbourhood improvement and "slum" upgrading. Co-designed with stakeholder groups in Lagos & Kano (Nigeria) and Nairobi (Kenya) over the past two years during engagements led by local project partners at University of Lagos, African Population and Health Research Center, and the Africa Center of Excellence for Population Health & Policy, the Platform offers the opportunity for users to generate improved versions of the data about their city by allowing for interactions through user validation. Want to see the Platform in action? Check out this introduction video below which takes you through some of the main features. ?? The first public prototype of the IDEAMAPS Data Ecosystem Platform will be launched on Tuesday, 5 November 2024 at the World Urban Forum in Cairo, Egypt. Stay tuned for details on how to access the tool after its official release. ?? #WUF12 #ItAllStartsAtHome #ItAllStartsLocally #ItAllStartsTogether #ItAllStartsNow #UserValidation https://lnkd.in/eFy59e2V

Join our session #AGU24 on Examining the Impacts of #ClimateChange on #Slums and #Marginalized Communities in the Cities of the Global South (American Geophysical Union) We are in the midst of a planetary crisis. Although climate change is a global phenomenon, it has uneven local consequences. The locus of extreme impoverishment can be noted in many slums and poor informal settlements of the Global South. With over 1.1. billion population, these areas deal with poverty, socio-economic inequality, inadequate infrastructure, health hazards, and environmental degradation, compounded by their locations in undesirable and at-risk areas. Therefore, it is critical to address the problems marginalized communities face to build resilient and just societies. ?? Submission: https://lnkd.in/eey4iMsn ? Deadline: 31 July 2024 We organize this session together with Anurupa Roy & Jacob Arndt (Oak Ridge National Laboratory), Dana R Thomson (Columbia University & IDEAMAPS Network), and Monika Kuffer (Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) of the University of Twente, IDEAtlas ITC, IDEAMAPS Network & #Space4ALL (NWO (Dutch Research Council)). Please share the session invitation!

This June, our partners in Kenya and Nigeria conducted participatory action research in Lagos, Kano, and Nairobi to gather data on community assets. Our goal? To update OpenStreetMap, making it more reflective of essential resources and landmarks as defined by the communities themselves. ???? A big thank you to all the participants who generously contributed their time, knowledge, and energy to this initiative. Read more here (https://lnkd.in/e86tRXWN) and stay tuned for more updates on our progress. #CommunityMapping?#OpenStreetMap?#ParticipatoryResearch?#Lagos?#Kano?#Nairobi?#CommunityAssets?#IDEAMAPS

Congratulations to Anaclaudia Rossbach !
Many congratulations to Anaclaudia Rossbach for being appointed as Executive Director of United Nations UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme). I'm proud of seeing a Brazilian women in this important post, and even happier for this to be someone with the experience and impressive track record of Ana Claudia with whom I had the pleasure to have productive discussions about our shared passion in the IDEAMAPS Network around the use data innovations to support inclusive upgrade of urban informal settlements and communities. I wish you the best luck and success on the post Anaclaudia Rossbach! https://lnkd.in/engSerFb
