We are proud to honor Len Humphries as a recipient of the Idaho Distinguished Service Medal, the second-highest civilian award presented in Idaho. Commissioner Humphries earned this recognition through his exceptional contributions to public safety and emergency communications across the state while serving as a Public Safety Communications Commissioner and the Sheriff of Fremont County. During his tenure with the Idaho Public Safety Communications Commission, Commissioner Humphries played an important role in improving interoperability, enhancing 911 services, and securing over $27 million in grant funding to support Idaho’s 44 counties. His efforts have laid a strong foundation for Next Generation 911, helping prepare Idaho for the future of emergency services. IOEM Director and retired Brigadier General Brad Richy presented Len Humphries with the award during the IPSCC meeting on November 7 in Ammon, Idaho. Congratulations, Commissioner Humphries, on this well-deserved honor!

??? Wildfires can leave more than burn scars— they can create dangerous conditions like debris flows and flash floods that can happen with little warning after intense rain. Do you know the risks? Debris flows are fast-moving, deadly landslides made of mud, rocks, and other debris, often triggered in burn areas after wildfires. They can happen in a flash, making preparedness essential: ? Stay Informed: Sign up for alerts and track weather updates. ? Watch for Warning Signs: Look for thunderstorms and sudden rises in water levels. ? Be Prepared: Have an emergency kit and evacuation plan ready. And always remember: Turn Around, Don’t Drown— floodwaters are more powerful than they seem. We’re thrilled to share that IOEM is partnering with STARBASE Idaho to bring hands-on STEM adventures to students across the Treasure Valley for the rest of the school year! Through this partnership, students dive into the science and engineering behind emergency management and learn about preparedness and mitigation guided by some of our IOEM staff. From building earthquake-resistant structures to exploring flood effects, students are getting firsthand experience in resilience strategies! Want to learn more about STARBASE Idaho? Visit: dodstarbase.org For info on bringing IOEM to your event, contact Joe Roth at [email protected].

Earlier this month, IOEM, alongside partners in Payette and Washington Counties, conducted the Southwest Idaho Rail Tabletop Exercise in Weiser! This exercise brought together over 60 participants from local, state, and private sector organizations, all working together to enhance Idaho’s preparedness for rail-related hazardous materials incidents. The scenario simulated a tanker derailment and hazardous spill, allowing responders to practice incident command, communication, public safety notifications, and more. This hands-on experience provided valuable insights for our responders, helping them better understand Idaho’s Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Plan and the roles of unified command. Together, we’re building a safer, more prepared Idaho! ??

Earlier this month, the Idaho Office of Emergency Management hosted a multi-state earthquake preparedness exercise at the National Oregon/California Trail Center in Montpelier, Idaho. More than 50 representatives from Idaho, Wyoming, and Utah gathered to discuss the potential impacts of a 7.3 magnitude earthquake on the Bear Lake Fault. Facilitated by IOEM Area Field Officer Darin Letzring, the event featured insights from experts at the University of Utah and Idaho Geological Survey. Participants reviewed resources, MOUs, and response gaps, strengthening partnerships and improving regional earthquake preparedness. These exercises help ensure faster, more effective responses in real events, saving lives and reducing damage.
