INL and the Office of Nuclear Energy | U.S. Department of Energy’s Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) campaign recently hit a big milestone in nuclear research! ?? This summer, the team completed irradiation of an enriched molten chloride fuel salt (UCl3-NaCl) in INL’s Neutron Radiography (NRAD) reactor. This is the world’s first irradiation for this type of liquid salt fuel, establishing a new domestic capability for using neutrons to irradiate enriched fuel salts. Following irradiation, researchers used NRAD to produce radiography imagery of the fuel capsule and are now conducting post-irradiation examinations on the salt and capsule to understand their behavior in an MSR environment. First designed in the 1950s, MSRs are a fuel-efficient, cost-effective type of reactor that can be built at a variety of sizes with a low waste output. INL is playing a key role in the Minerals to Materials Supply Chain Research Facility (METALLIC) project led by National Energy Technology Laboratory and funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management. ?? INL will establish the Beneficiation and Separation Centers, becoming the go-to lab for processing materials that contain naturally-occurring radioactive and rare earth elements. This collaboration extends to the Critical Materials Institute and Critical Materials Collaborative, creating powerful synergies with geothermal, mining, coal and subsurface studies.????
