Changing the world’s energy future and securing our nation's critical infrastructure ??
关于我们
In operation since 1949, Idaho National Laboratory is a science-based, applied engineering national laboratory dedicated to supporting the U.S. Department of Energy's missions in energy research, nuclear science and national defense. The world's first usable amount of electricity from nuclear energy was generated here in 1951. At 890 square miles (569,135 acres), the INL Site is roughly 85 percent the size of Rhode Island. In addition to our geographic resources, the lab hosts a variety of unique facilities, including the Advanced Test Reactor National Scientific User Facility. Complementing our nuclear research, the lab has numerous alternative energy and national security programs. Robotics, wind power, high-performance computing, biofuels, critical infrastructure protection, carbon management and advanced vehicle testing are just a few examples of our multifaceted research capabilities. If you are looking for a 21st-century energy or technology career, visit our Careers tab at www.inl.gov.

Last week, we kicked off the 2025 cohort of the OT Defender Fellowship. ?? This highly-selective educational program, created, funded and led by the Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security, and Emergency Response (CESER) for middle- and senior-level operational technology (OT) cybersecurity managers in the energy sector. They are provided the opportunity to learn about the strategies used to target our energy infrastructure and the cybersecurity tools and research the U.S. government is developing to counter them. Protecting the nation’s energy infrastructure from modern threats is vital to maintaining national security, a vibrant economy, and public health and safety. Did you know Idaho National Laboratory has sponsored and hosted a regional National Science Bowl competition for 35 years? ?? ???? This year, more than 45 Idaho teams went head-to-head in several grueling rounds of a round-robin-style competition. Join us in congratulating Twin Falls High School and Malad Middle School for earning first place in the high school and middle school categories, respectively. Both teams will head to Washington, D.C., in April to compete against other teams from across the U.S. “The science bowl offers a fun, fast-paced environment where students of different ages can show their intelligence in math and science.” — Steve Zollinger, Eastern Idaho Science Bowl coordinator Learn more about the National Science Bowl and our STEM program: https://lnkd.in/ec-dZmU https://lnkd.in/gUfujNfD U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) TWIN FALLS SCHOOL DISTRICT 411 #NationalScienceBowl #STEM #competition #education #science #INL #ScienceBowl #Idaho

Researchers at the INL-led Center for Thermal Energy Transport under Irradiation (TETI) have published their 100th paper—a significant milestone for this team! ?? Their first paper was published in IEEE Nanotechnology Magazine in April 2019. TETI is one of 44 Energy Frontier Research Centers funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Office of Science, and includes nine institutions and over 30 researchers. Their work in fundamental science has significant implications for nuclear fuel performance codes being developed for advanced reactors. ?? In 2020, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) awarded $12.5 million to FuelCell Energy and INL to support a project integrating hydrogen production and nuclear power. FuelCell Energy designed and manufactured a new, ready-to-go modular solid oxide electrolysis system, and recently delivered it to INL's Energy Systems Laboratory for testing and validation. This is the largest solid oxide electrolyzer ever tested at INL and the first fully integrated electrolysis platform demonstrated at INL. ?? The testing phase is expected to last for about one year, including a variety of tests to measure how efficiently the electrolysis system can split steam into hydrogen. In 1951, Experimental Breeder Reactor-I generated the first usable amounts of power from nuclear energy. ???????? ? This National Historic Landmark, located at Idaho National Laboratory's desert Site, has been preserved as a tourist destination, open every year between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Check it out ??
EBR-I was the first power plant to produce usable electricity through atomic fission. It powered four 200-watt lightbulbs in 1951 and eventually generated enough electricity to light the entire facility. EBR-I was a liquid metal-cooled fast reactor designed to demonstrate that it could create more fuel than it consumed. Not only do liquid metal coolants like sodium – or the sodium-potassium alloy used in EBR-I – transfer heat better than today's light-water reactors, but they also have a more sustainable fuel cycle over a longer period. Volunteers from our Team INL Program spent an evening packing over 200 meal bags for kids on spring break. ?? ?? During school breaks, kids that rely on free breakfast and lunch at school can miss out on regular, nutritious meals. So, United Way of Eastern Idaho steps up to send these kids home with easy-to-prepare, healthy foods. United Way also ran its "Power of $10" fundraiser to help purchase food for this program and INL employees donated over $1,100!
