?? New publication alert!!! ??? Between 2016 and 2023, there were 62.1 million internal displacements of children tied to weather events such as storms, floods, droughts and wildfires. The frequency and severity of these disasters are only expected to intensify as the climate crisis intensifies. And while there is no consensus as to how many children will be impacted by climate-related migration and displacement, it is certain that many children in this situation will be highly vulnerable. It is also certain that the experiences and needs of children on the move due to climate change must be included in the climate action agenda. ?How do we ensure the rights of children on the move are protected no matter how the impacts of climate change unfold? ?Which deprivations, risks and vulnerabilities are children who leave home for climate-related reasons likely to face? ?And where are more data and research urgently needed to ensure the global community is equipped to ensure this population of children grows up to reach their full potential? Learn more about this critical child rights issue, how data can support children who are on the move due to the impacts of climate change, and the actions we can take today to protect them in IDAC’s new report on climate mobility and childhood - https://lnkd.in/dUGpjJxf Eurostat IOM - UN Migration?OECD - OCDE?UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency UNHCR Data?UNICEF?European Commission?@DGINTPA Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken

“In today’s interconnected world, the ability to prove one’s identity isn't just a legal formality—it’s a fundamental human right that unlocks access to a wide range of services and opportunities.” Thank you for reaching out asking me to write this piece with you Petra Nahmias. Gratitude also to government partners for the discussions we had in the four days meeting on inclusive civil registration and vital statistics co- organized by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency; IDAC - International Data Alliance for Children on the Move; #EGRISS and #UNESCAP. Hope we managed to reflect some of the thoughts and outcomes of the meeting in this note.

Whether fleeing a hurricane, moving for school, or staying behind while parents migrate, children on the move face a unique set of circumstances that come with distinct challenges, vulnerabilities and opportunities. Actively engaging young people, especially those who are marginalized and/or silenced, in data-related processes can enhance their agency, communication and leadership skills. This year on #WorldYouthDay IDAC has partnered with Migration Youth & Children Platform to spearhead efforts in advancing the meaningful participation of children and youth in migration and displacement data processes. With experts from IDAC, IOM, UNICEF and UNHCR, the session discussed the importance of accurate and timely age-disaggregated data, and how better data can enhance understanding and policymaking to protect and empower children on the move.
I had the pleasure of leading a UNHCR-hosted panel this summer, where we addressed the pressing issue of improving data on children forced to flee and other vulnerable groups of children on the move. Our discussion, enriched by the insights from #IOM, #UNHCR, and #IDAC, focused on the importance of collaboration and communication. A key takeaway was the importance of telling the story behind the figures, beautifully highlighted by Adam Jacobi M?ller, author of "The Boy Who Could Swim," a poignant narrative about a refugee boy's journey. While data is crucial, its ultimate purpose is to influence evidence-based policy making and share true, impactful stories, contrary to the proliferation of fake news. Data is a powerful tool, but its true value lies in its ability to shape policies and narratives that protect and empower vulnerable children. Together, through collaboration and innovation, we can ensure that every child’s story is heard and acted upon. #ChildrenOnTheMove #DataForGood #RefugeeChildren #Collaboration #EvidenceBasedPolicy #UNHCR #IOM #IDAC
