Our very own Doug Hargrave, GGA, CEM participated on a panel at Colorado Solar and Storage Association (COSSA)’s Solar Power & Energy Storage Conference, Mountain West called: Turning Buildings into Grid Resources. Along with Doug were Sharon Jaye, D.Ed, SFP Jaye from Energize Denver, and Tripp Hyde, PE, MLE, LEED AP Hyde from Hyde Engr.?The panel was moderated by Leland Keller from the City of Ft. Collins, to discuss how buildings can contribute to a more resilient electrical grid and be more resilient themselves while also providing cost savings. Doug was able to share his perspective that, “There are no ‘out of the box’ microgrid solutions at this time.” Customization of battery energy storage systems, often abbreviated as BESS, microgrids, and buildings as a grid resource in general are essential to providing cost-effective solutions for buildings to also reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. More importantly, utilizing current technologies to embrace an energy source and storage strategy is a vital component of sustainable infrastructure. It is the next step after reducing a building’s energy demand. BESS, microgrids, and resiliency are hot topics for our clients. At Iconergy, we like to think “outside of the box” with a process that accounts for each building’s unique operations, energy footprint, and client goals. Who doesn’t enjoy a good crane pic? Our #Designbuild team is replacing a chiller that was originally installed in 2003. Winter is an optimal time for a chiller replacement project in Colorado because, during the cold winter months, these systems are typically not operating and will not affect occupants of the building from being off-line. At Iconergy, our sustainability practices reach beyond the work our sustainability consultants complete. Our construction team also goes the extra mile to make sure that big equipment, like chillers that have reached the end of their expected life, get properly recycled to reduce construction waste that would otherwise go to the landfill. Lauren Monti authored, “You Know Your Energy Use Index, Now What?” “Once the EUI for a building is known, so is the amount of energy reduction that needs to take place. Making changes without a plan rarely reduces the EUI enough to become compliant.?It is important to put a strategy in place that considers both budget and the anticipated payback period.” Beyond benchmarking data in the #ENERGYSTAR portfolio, strategies our team implements to lower EUI include #retrocommissioning, #ASHRAE #energyaudit, and equipment upgrades.
