It seems ICOLD's involvement in EU research programs like ETIP HYDROPOWER and @Hydropower Europe is bringing interesting fruits. Thank you Honorary President Anton J. Schleiss for making this a reality !
Water - Energy - Environment Scientist at European Commission // Sustainable Hydropower expert // Esperto Ruote idrauliche & Idroelettrico
???????????????????? ?????? ????????????-?????????????? ???????????????????? ???? ?????? ???????????????? ?????????? The 2024 technology reports of the Clean Energy Technology Observatory of the European Commission, EU Science, Research and Innovation, are published, including the #hydropower and #pumped-#storage one! https://lnkd.in/dr5q-un8 From next week, weekly posts will be posted with key highlights for each chapter! Stay tuned on the upcoming scientific paper on pumped-storage hydropower in the European Union, soon available, with considerations on energy storage capacity in hydropower reservoirs and future potential! Some results of the 2024 hydropower release will be presented already at #hydro2024 in Graz in the coming days at my speech on Wednesday, organized by Aqua~Media International Ltd (The International Journal on Hydropower & Dams), and were partially discussed at the Slovenian Parliament on Friday where I joined as speaker, event organized by SLOCOLD - Slovenian National Committee on Large Dams and Slovenian Academy of Engineering (IAS). A big thanks to the coauthors and colleagues who have made this project possible: Aliki Georgakaki, Simon LETOUT, Aikaterini Mountraki, Ela Ince, Juan Gea Bermúdez, Nigel Taylor, Thomas Schleker, Giulia Serra, Christian Thiel, Vangelis Tzimas, and Daniela Anghileri who reviewed the report. The stakeholders that this year provided some comments and wrote some paragraphs, and also the ones who provided some insights to the Net Zero Industry Act, are: Adrian Lindermuth of Eurelectric, Francesco Puddu and MATEJ ZALUBERSEK of Scotta Turboinstitut, Peter Stettner of ANDRITZ Hydro, Ana Cristina Nunes of EDP Renewables, Kübra Kale of Voith Hydro, Janne Ala of Kemijoki Oy, Barbara Fischer-Aupperle of GWNET: Global Women's Network for the Energy Transition, Eduard Doujak of PEN@Hydropower, Luciano Canale of the European Investment Bank (EIB), Timothy Weber, Anton J. Schleiss of ETIP HYDROPOWER, Matteo Bianciotto and Rebecca Ellis of International Hydropower Association (IHA), plus obviously all the others of the previous editions, specified in the report.

Nigeria launches the first World Bank SPIN project?(SPIN for sustainable power and irrigation for Nigeria), a very promising operation working from the beginning on the #Water_Food_Energy_nexus angle. ICOLD supports this initiative, which is going in the same direction that the recommendations of ICOLD Technical Bulletins 186, 173 and 171. https://lnkd.in/eFPQVMmr

Water storage is a crucial parameter for the climate change adaptation or mitigation. The report by the Multilateral Development banks is welcomed by ICOLD VP Liza Bensasson for reminding this fact.
Vice President (Europe Zone) ICOLD-CIGB & Environment & Water Resources Director at ENM SA Consulting Engineers
?? Water Supply and Food Security require increasing water storage: Current global water demand is 4,600 km3 per year, with 70% used for irrigation. Feeding a population of 9.7 billion by 2050 will require more freshwater storage to avoid water stress for up to 4.6 billion people. ? Doubling the current hydropower capacity is essential to meet energy transition goals. However, financial uncertainties, regulatory ambiguities, and administrative delays hinder new hydropower and storage projects ?? But here is the good news! ?? The release of the multilateral development banks (#MDBs) Common Approach to Measuring Climate Results – Update on Indicators ( ?? in first comment) is a step forward to accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs) and the goals of the #ParisAgreement. A common platform for assessment of the benefits and impacts of projects providing water and energy security, risk management and climate change resilience is a strong recommendation by the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD) to streamline investment towards Climate change adaptation and Energy transition. ? ? Water storage capacity added or improved in a climate-related water-stressed context and unconventional water resources capacity added or improved to respond to climate-related water stressed context is now recognized as an #Adaptation and #Resilience indicator ?? Energy storage, that decreases curtailment of renewable energy in existing capacity is a #Mitigation indicator ?? No wonder why Hydropower with water storage is considered the backbone for clean energy transition. ?? ?In other words: "Storing Water, Securing the Future" #withhydropower

it's hard to believe after the terrible images coming from Spain,Italy or France, but there are now water shortages in Europe, for example in Bulgaria. Whether used to control flooding or to store water, dams are still man's and nature's best friend when it comes to protecting against these hazards. https://lnkd.in/gB4xXMKb

An interesting research program from the European Commission
We are very excited to announce the launch of SHERPA, new solutions for hydropower plants, a new project providing solutions for hydropower plant #refurbishment! ?? The main objective of this newly funded #HorizonEurope project is to develop and validate #innovative #technologies for refurbishing existing hydropower plants (#HPPs). The #kickoff meeting took place at the Basque Country Delegation (Eusko Jaurlaritza - Gobierno Vasco), at the heart of the EU Bubble in #Brussels. A big thank you for hosting us! We would also like to thank all the partners for your contributions and exchanges, and specially to the Project Officer Clara Astudillo for joining us during the project first meeting. Iberdrola Generación, S.A., Iberdrola, Zabala Innovation Spain, Zabala Innovation Europe, Voith Hydro, Innomerics, EPRI in Europe, AECOM. Stay connected for the next steps!?? #SHERPA #EUproject #HorizonEurope #hydropower #refurbishment

Thanks IHA for this very interesting document on Pumping Storage plants projects
PSH projects are major, complex infrastructure developments with the characteristics common to this category. Without the right risk mitigation measures in place, the possibility that projects will over-run in cost and time could deter policymakers, and mean they turn away from energy storage. "Sustainability should be at the heart of all hydropower projects. It's vital to work with local communities and governments from the outset to ensure projects are developed in a way that benefits everyone." Rebecca Ellis, Senior Energy Policy Manager, IHA. Check out the graphic that illustrates the different risks that need to be considered when developing a PSH project. On the occasion of the nearing 90th anniversary of the Hoover Dam, this environmentalist publication makes a great abstract of the contributions of the dam to sustainable development, reminding all the different roles of a large dam, beyond hydropower.
