We exist to transform oppressive systems that have caused harm and assist young people as they heal from hurt to wholeness. The traumas of incarceration and violence severely impact young people in our community. We believe in a restorative approach to healing and preventing future harm. Instead of perpetuating the cycle of violence and punishment, we can heal and form a stronger community. Incarceration creates more challenges and barriers for the person and their family. The impact that incarceration has on families and communities cannot be stressed enough. Incarceration disrupts and harms families, contributing to intergenerational cycles of incarceration. Youth with incarcerated parents are more likely to experience emotional trauma and to be involved in the criminal legal system themselves. Reducing incarceration and focusing on community-based interventions can help break these cycles and build stronger, safer communities. Our diversion programs make a difference! Alternatives to incarceration make an impact in the lives of youth and young adults in our community. At CHOOSE 180 we partner with the City of Seattle Prosecuting Attorney’s office to offer young people an alternative to prosecution. Incarceration fails to rehabilitate. Many individuals impacted by incarceration struggle to reintegrate into society due to a lack of education, employment opportunities, and mental health support. Because of this we see high rates of recidivism. We know that incarceration does not stop harmful behavior, but approaches like restorative justice, rehabilitation, and diversion programs are tried and true alternatives! The Sentencing Project found that young people incarcerated in youth correctional facilities are far more likely to be later arrested, convicted, and incarcerated as adults.
