Yesterday, Invertia published an article with Gonzalo García-Mu?oz, CEO of ICEYE Spain and Global SVP of Operations at ICEYE, discussing how our satellite technology provided critical insights during the recent DANA Storm in Valencia. The article highlights how ICEYE delivered accurate data within days of the severe floods and explores additional game-changing applications of satellite-powered natural catastrophe insights. It also delves into ICEYE's operations and our SAR satellite constellation—the largest in the world—capable of capturing Earth imagery regardless of sunlight or adverse weather conditions. Efforts to map Canada’s flood risk are advancing, with $164.2M invested under the National Adaptation Strategy and over 250 active projects. However, significant hurdles still need to be addressed. In a recent interview with Insurance Business Canada Magazine, Steven Sanders, Strategic Account Manager at ICEYE, highlights a critical gap: “Regions considered at low exposure are experiencing multiple flood events in just a few years, underscoring the need for more accurate data.” With satellite technology and advanced datasets, ICEYE is helping insurers bridge these gaps, enabling smarter risk assessment and flood mitigation. “ICEYE data can support risk managers at every stage in the event response process, even before the event starts,” explains Mirka Vahtera, our Strategic Account Manager for Europe at ICEYE. In a recent interview, Mirka joined Guillermo Polo Llana, Mapfre Re’s Natural Perils Analyst, to discuss how ICEYE’s satellite-powered data is helping risk managers make proactive, data-driven decisions as extreme weather events intensify. Read the article (initially published for this year’s FERMA Forum) to understand how insurers can implement proactive strategies to respond to growing climate risks.

ICEYE is honored to lead the consortium in an industrial participation program for the Finnish Ministry of Defense F-35 program, to develop advanced dual-use space technologies for space-based Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities for military users such as the Finnish Defense Forces. Together with Lockheed Martin and prominent Finnish industry players — Insta, Huld, DA-Group, and the Finnish Meteorological Institute as a supplier — we advance technological development. The work will progress disruptive capabilities such as analytics with Artificial Intelligence (AI), and encompass mobile ISR cell development, advanced analytics, and high-performance SAR imaging for all weather and light conditions, making it especially suitable for the demanding Arctic weather and light conditions of NATO’s Northern Flank. The partnership also aims to support the Finnish Defense Forces with the goal to enhance the security of supply and strengthen Finland’s position as a leader in cutting-edge aerospace technology. “This partnership aligns with our ambition to strengthen information capabilities and develop advanced technologies, ensuring that the Finnish Defense Forces and Allies can be equipped with the vital knowledge and capabilities required to maintain the strategic advantage,” said Pekka Laurila, Chief Strategy Officer and Co-founder of ICEYE. In the first half of November, Southern Europe experienced severe flash floods and extreme weather conditions. From the Mediterranean Coast of mainland Spain to parts of Greece and Sicily, we delivered multiple flood extent and depth analyses to support emergency response efforts in affected areas. Based on our final, 8th analysis release for the DANA Storm in Spain, we observed more than 6,800 impacted buildings and a total flood extent of 668 km2. Due to the warming of the Mediterranean, events like the recent flash floods in Spain can become more frequent in Southern Europe. In an insightful discussion with The Insurer TV, Anke Sielker, our Head of Reinsurance Practice at ICEYE, and Michal L?rinc, Head of Catastrophe Insight for Aon’s Impact Forecasting Team, dive into the DANA storm’s impact, exploring how this event and its estimated €1.5–€2.5 billion in losses compare to previous major floods. They also discuss the widening gap between insured and economic losses and the broader trend of rising flood risk across the region. Learn how ICEYE’s data supported Spanish authorities and what more the insurance industry can do to help governments tackle these challenges in the future: https://hubs.li/Q02Yv5t_0

Europe continues to see damage from multiple floods across the continent. After wrapping up our analysis of the DANA storm, our team is now monitoring the flooding across the Mediterranean Coast of mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands. We've delivered the first round of flood extent and depth analysis yesterday, with initial findings revealing over 700 affected buildings in Málaga. Further analysis will cover more regions along Spain's eastern coast and Ibiza. P.S. We're also monitoring the flood impact in Greece and the flash flooding across Sicily, Italy.
