ICC Alaska?was?honored to meet and welcome the inaugural U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for Arctic Affairs, Dr. Michael Sfraga. We celebrate his confirmation and look forward to him leading the charge to bring the Arctic, and in particular Alaska, to the front and center of?U.S.?and foreign policy. Ambassador?Sfraga's role will enhance the work we do at ICC, in Alaska and across Inuit Nunaat. Inuit are the common denominator?across the Arctic, and we have a long history of working together at the international level. We look forward to working with Ambassador Sfraga to advance our mutual goals. ? Learn more and follow Ambassador Sfraga on his webpage:?https://lnkd.in/ge8uMS7m

  • Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC) attended and presented in a number of sessions of the Arctic Circle Assembly, with a strong focus on advancing Inuit food security and food sovereignty. ICC organized and hosted a session on Breaking Barriers to Advance Alaskan Inuit Food Sovereignty, with JakyLou Olemaun from Utqiagvik, Nagruk Harcharek from the Voice of the Arctic I?upiat, and Vernae Angnaboogok from ICC Alaska delivering the presentation. We emphasized the importance of being unified in our advocacy, which has helped us to overcome a number of historical and current attacks on our food sovereignty. We stressed that our people are calling for meaningful roles for Inuit in wildlife management and for our Indigenous Knowledge to be utilized alongside science without question. We reaffirmed that our traditional management practices have sustained our people and our resources in the Arctic for thousands of years, and without food sovereignty, Inuit cannot have food security. ICC also participated in two panel sessions on the Central Arctic Ocean organized by ICC, Ocean Conservancy, Oceans North, and the Korea Polar Research Institute, one on Scientific and Indigenous Knowledge about the Central Arctic Ocean and the other on The Central Arctic Ocean: Continuing to Move From Theory to Practice, with Herb Nakimayak (Canada), Kuluk Lyberth (Greenland), and Vernae Angnaboogok (Alaska) speaking in those sessions. We emphasized that Inuit engagement in the Central Arctic Ocean Fisheries Agreement brings a holistic approach through Indigenous Knowledge contributions from Inuit serving on our national delegations. We continue to reaffirm?that Inuit are an integral part of the Arctic ecosystem, and our people are connected to the Central Arctic Ocean through the marine resources?that migrate into and out of those waters.?
