ICARDA At COP 29 ICARDA hosted a pivotal event on "A Just Transition in the Agrifood System," aligned with the COP29 Harmoniya Initiative at the CGIAR / FAO food and agriculture pavilion, COP29 Azerbaijan. With the presence of H.E. Minister Majnun Mammadov , the event highlighted science-driven solutions, financial tools, and collaborative pathways to foster resilient, sustainable food systems that prioritize farmers, the backbone of agrifood systems and the most vulnerable to climate change. Key takeaways from the event: ?? H.E. Minister Majnun Mammadov emphasized the Harmoniya Initiative as a catalyst for global climate action, empowering vulnerable groups like women and youth in agriculture. "No one must be left behind on this journey to agricultural sustainability." ?? Charles Spillane, ICARDA Board Member, reaffirmed the role of farmers in this transition, saying, "The just transition of agri-food systems must be driven with and for farmers, ensuring practical, impactful solutions for resilient livelihoods." ?? Sona Abdullayeva, COP29 Presidency Expert, stressed the Harmoniya initiative’s focus on inclusive empowerment, ensuring marginalized communities, especially women, youth, and smallholder farmers, are equipped to adapt and thrive in the face of climate change. As we move forward, ICARDA remains committed to creating inclusive, resilient, and sustainable food systems with farmers at the heart of the transition. ?? ICARDA works in dry areas to promote sustainable agriculture, raise farmer incomes, and strengthen food security.
关于我们
Getting agricultural research innovations into use in the dry areas is critically important, especially since these regions cover 40 per cent of the earth’s surface and are home to 2.5 billion people – a significant percentage of the world’s population. This is the core work of the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Area (ICARDA), which works with partners worldwide, developing innovations to improve food security and the livelihoods of the rural poor. ICARDA’s work targets non-tropical dry areas in developing countries, and also produces international public goods with potential for global application. Research covers crops (wheat, barley, faba bean, lentil, chickpea and forage legumes), the management of natural resources (water, land, biodiversity), small ruminant production (sheep and goats), farming systems (intensification, diversification, integration between farming system components), and socio-economics and policy research – on how policies can be more relevant to the situation of low income countries. The estimated benefits of ICARDA’s crop improvement research and production of new varieties over the past 3 decades has been estimated at US$850 million per year. Over 900 improved varieties of wheat, developed from ICARDA material, have been released for cultivation worldwide. The new varieties offer higher yields; better tolerance to drought, heat, cold and salinity; and improved resistance to diseases, weeds and insect pests. Watch our short video - ‘ICARDA - What We Do’

???? ICARDA was honored to participate in the High-Level Launch Event of the COP29 Baku Dialogue on Water for Climate Action in Azerbaijan, organized by the COP29 Azerbaijan Presidency with United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) , United Nations Economic Commission for Europe , and World Meteorological Organization . The event was attended by Mukhtar Babayev, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources and COP29 President. We proudly endorse the COP29 Declaration on Water for Climate Action, which calls for strengthened global collaboration and the integration of water solutions into climate policies to address the challenges posed by climate change on water systems and ecosystems. " Water is at the heart of climate action, with agriculture consuming 70-85% of global freshwater resources. It’s not only a driver but also a victim of climate change. In dryland regions, water scarcity is linked to conflicts, migration, and malnutrition, challenges that are only intensifying. The Declaration gives dryland communities hope and a voice in global decision-making." Vinay Nangia, Research Team Leader, ICARDA CGIAR

ICARDA at COP29 ICARDA, alongside IFPRI, hosted an official side event at COP29 in Baku titled "Think Global, Act Local: Food Loss and Waste for Climate Change Adaptation and Security in the Global South." Together with our esteemed panelists and participants, we had an insightful discussion on effective strategies to reduce food loss, implement sustainable food waste management practices, improve food security, reduce malnutrition, and combat climate change. Here are some key takeaways from our session: ?? Ann Vaughan, Deputy Assistant Administrator, USAID: "Decreasing food loss and waste through improved market access and supply chains is a win-win, it puts more money in the pockets of farmers and helps build a thriving agri-economy." ?? Charles Spillane, Board Member, ICARDA: “At ICARDA, we focus on improving soil health and agronomy for higher yields and reduced food loss, while also advancing policies that minimize losses across the value chain. These efforts conserve energy and water, enhance production efficiency, and create a sustainable future for dryland communities.” ?? Vinay Nangia, Research Team Leader, ICARDA: “Our water innovations are making breakthroughs in improving production security by empowering farmers to plan, manage, and rely on consistent water access. This not only reduces food loss but also optimizes water use, ensuring more resources are available for agricultural production.” ?? Vitthal Kauthale, BAIF Development: “Our cactus project minimizes food loss and waste by enhancing the production of a product used for food, fertilizer, clothing, and fuel, ensuring that every part benefits farmers and leaves little to waste.” Thank you to everyone who joined us for this important discussion, and let's continue working together to make a difference in global food systems. ????
