Meet four Longhorns who traveled to Northern Ireland last summer to learn about historical conflict and peacebuilding. https://lnkd.in/gJaWAgqn Now back on the Forty Acres, they’re applying lessons they learned about trauma-informed design to create better healing spaces for UT students. The trip to Northern Ireland was one segment of a transformative, year-long learning journey, made possible by supervising faculty, Bruce Kellison, Noel Busch-Armendariz, Monica Martinez, and the ?President’s Award for Global Learning administered by Texas Global | The University of Texas at Austin. Coursework was intentionally interdisciplinary. Kellison explained: “The goal of the class was to teach students strategies to address historical impacts of trauma and conflict — we approached this using different lenses: history, restorative justice, economics.” The students — Kena Desai, Trishta Nguyen, Kate Whyte, Anika Bhatia — cite a few trip highlights: witnessing the mural-covered “peace walls” of Belfast; seeing the (older-than-Stonehenge) Newgrange World Heritage Site; and experiencing The Corrymeela Community, a nonprofit center devoted to reconciliation. Back in Austin for their senior year, the students’ goal is clear: “We really want to uplift and promote the mental health of UT students.” ?? The IC2 Institute was established at The University of Texas at Austin in 1977 as a think-and-do tank to study the drivers of economic development and shared prosperity. IC2 has a deep legacy not only of academic research, but also of real-world practice—and connecting academia, business, and community leaders around bold ideas. Under current director S. Craig Watkins, IC2 is moving ahead with new programs that build on the Institute’s history of community-building and ecosystem creation. The Institute’s new strategic initiative, “Innovating Well-Being,” will drive research and programs that advance equity in social, economic, environmental and health systems. We believe that prosperity goes far beyond traditional economic measures; that prosperity demands the equitable allocation of life-enhancing resources. Current systemic inequities—the digital divide, health disparities, the racial wealth gap, social and environmental isolation of rural and poor communities—are areas that require attention and innovation.

A new report from the Bureau of Business Research (BBR) at the IC2 Institute examines the economic impact of advanced #nuclear energy in Texas: https://lnkd.in/gccyD26e The report considers both the manufacture and deployment of small modular reactors in Texas over a 30-year period, and predicts future GDP, income, and employment growth. The report also examines Texas supply chain and workforce potential and calculates the cost reduction (incentives) necessary to make new nuclear energy competitive under current market conditions. Part of a larger report commissioned by the Public Utility Commission of Texas, the BBR report emerges as the interest in nuclear energy continues to pick up steam. Authors of the BBR impact study include: Bruce Kellison, Matt Kammer-Kerwick, Jim Jarrett, Brian Lewandowski, Rob Kasten, Joshua Rhodes, PhD, Michael E. Webber, Brandon Bloom, Jackson Edgar. #EconomicImpact #EnergyTransition

It's a joy to shine the spotlight on one of our student superstars: Ishani Purohit. A soon-to-be med student, Ishani has contributed to the work of the IC2 Institute in significant ways. With mentors Matt Kammer-Kerwick and S. Craig Watkins and fellow researcher, Kyle Cox, Ishani co-authored a published paper exploring non-medical drivers of health. This semester, Ishani is interviewing thought leaders about the use of #AI in health care and conducting a literature review to deepen her/our understanding of the subject. ?? Read our short Q&A to learn why Ishani wants to be a doctor, what advice she would give a new student researcher, and what she misses most about Austin: https://lnkd.in/gGwwQaGr #StudentEngagement #ResearchImpact #HealthAI

When it comes to non-medical drivers of health — things like access to fresh food, quality of social connections, education — which ones affect health outcomes the most??And does the relative importance of these non-medical drivers vary across different demographic groups? In a just-published article, IC2 Institute researchers S. Craig Watkins, Matt Kammer-Kerwick, Ishani Purohit and Kyle Cox provide a methodology for understanding the complicated (and little understood) interplay between demographic factors, non-medical drivers, and specific health outcomes. Their initial work focused on a single health outcome — mental depressive disorder — and drew upon the vast All of Us dataset administered by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). There's more exploration to come! ?? Read more about their work and its impact: https://lnkd.in/gnQex_JW ?? Matt Kammer-Kerwick and Bruce Kellison enjoyed some off-road exploring of Boise during the annual conference of the Association for University Business and Economic Research (AUBER).?Another extracurricular highlight: visiting the famed "Smurf Turf" of Boise State University with fellow Auber members, Sean Snaith and Brian Lewandowski. Matt and Bruce delivered two presentations to the AUBER audience: one related to America’s changing economic geography, the other focused on the economic impacts of small modular reactors. Matt serves as the recently-appointed director of the Bureau of Business Research (BBR) at the IC2 Institute; Bruce leaves his BBR post in January, retiring after 26 years. The BBR — now almost 100 years old — conducts interdisciplinary research and generates analyses, economic impact studies and decision tools helpful to policymakers in Texas and beyond. #ResearchImpact #EconomicResearch

We were honored to join your other "families" in the walk with you, Gregory Pogue, and to raise funds for the The ALS Association. Next year, pushups for the Austin contingent!
Entrepreneurship depends on relationships - and not using these transactional but as an opportunity to value people and receive value from them. When you invest in relationships, you must deal with the messiness of people. ALS has made my life, and that of my family, a bit of a mess. In the midst, so many people have embraced us in this journey. Drum roll please..... A BIG THANK YOU to all our friends, work colleagues at IC2 Institute at The University of Texas at Austin and Maxwell Locke & Ritter LLP, Juntos Belize team, Divine Canines, and family from around Texas who supported The ALS Association's Walk to Defeat ALS this past Saturday. About 30 people came to show solidarity with Lanette Pogue and me as we live with this disease and 50 individuals financially donated toward the cause. The support went beyond Austin, friends in Sweden led by P?r Johansson did push-ups in support - apparently, they did enough walking on drills and needed a change of pace! Colleagues Mary Rodriguez, daughter Addie, and Emily Spandikow designed awesome custom t-shirts for the event. I really appreciate S. Craig Watkins who has been so supportive. The reality is, so many people contributed, if I start to name people - I risk leaving someone out. If you do not see your name, it is not a lack of love - just a desire not to miss someone. Thanks to everyone!!!

Executive, researcher, practitioner in inquiry learning. STEM education, entrepreneurship, regional development.
Much of what I learned about technology and regional economic development traces back to my UT Austin MSTC (Masters in Tech Commercialization) professor, and then mentor at the IC2 Institute, Dr. David Gibson. For the academics and policymakers out there--much to be learned about how technology, innovation, knowledge transfer and professional networks make a whole far more than the sum of the parts. Dr. Dave, you did that for me...thank you! His latest work: https://lnkd.in/gWnVWK3A
