Every year, over one million people are killed in motor vehicle accidents worldwide. A recent report from the Social Science Research Network found a strong link between drivers' lax attitudes toward road safety policies and their likelihood of committing traffic violations, which are a major cause of accidents. Specific interventions that can alter drivers' attitudes and behaviors, such as stricter enforcement of traffic laws, can lead to safer roads and reduced risks of traffic violations and accidents. Every day in 2022, an average of 3 children under 13 were tragically killed, and 429 were injured in cars, SUVs, pickups, and vans. ? In 2022, 39% of children killed in car crashes were unrestrained. These numbers remind us how vital it is to use the right car seat or booster for a child’s age, height, and weight, and ensure it’s properly installed. Thanks to Maria Moreno and SEOPAN for arranging a meeting for the IBTTA Executive Committee with the Ministerio de Transportes y Movilidad Sostenible. Bill Halkias, Joi Dean, Christophe Boutin, Pat Jones, Maria Moreno, and Mark Muriello spent a morning with Juan Pedro Fernández Palomino, Director-General for Roads in Spain's Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility. Discussions highlighted the critical role of sustainable funding mechanisms in maintaining critical highway infrastructure and improving the transport network.
