Research Funding and Publication Funding – Does It Matter? In academia, funding comes in two forms, but they serve very different purposes: 1. Research funding supports the actual work—covering lab costs, equipment, data collection, and researcher salaries. 2. Publication funding pays for disseminating findings, often through Open Access fees like article processing charges (APCs) or book processing charges (BPCs). Why does this matter? Because how research is funded impacts who gets to conduct it, where it gets published, and who can access it. * Funders focus on maximizing impact. * Publishers rely on APCs to sustain Open Access. * Researchers must navigate both to ensure their work is conducted and shared effectively. Researchers - have you faced challenges securing both types of funding? How has this shaped your publishing choices? • Why is Reliable Data on Open Access Books Hard to Find? A deepseek vs. OpenAI experiment. ???Open Access Books (OA Books)?are transforming scholarly publishing, but finding reliable discipline-wise data remains a significant challenge. Recently, we explored various methods to gather insights on the growth of OA Books by discipline: ~ Online searches?yielded fragmented and inconsistent data. ~ Generative AI tools?like OpenAI struggled to provide accurate, verifiable information. ~ deepseek, however, delivered detailed, well-sourced data, breaking down OA Books by?Social Sciences, Humanities, Physical Sciences, and Life Sciences, along with growth projections and key drivers. Here’s the?discipline-wise breakdown?of OA Books (2023) that deepseek generated: 1. Social Sciences: 12,000 OA Books (40% of total) 2. Humanities: 9,500 OA Books (32% of total) 3. Physical Sciences: 5,000 OA Books (17% of total) 4. Life Sciences: 3,500 OA Books (11% of total) Source: Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB), 2023. Key Takeaways: * Social Sciences and Humanities dominate OA Book publishing, reflecting the importance of monographs in these fields. * STEM fields are catching up, driven by funder mandates and technological advancements. But here’s the bigger question:?Why is it so hard to find reliable, up-to-date discipline-wise data about Open Access Books? Are there databases, repositories, or tools your organization relies on? Let’s discuss in the comments! ?? #OpenAccess #ScholarlyPublishing #DeepSeek #DataChallenges #AcademicResearch #OABooks

  • Open Access (OA) books remain a important yet underdeveloped segment of scholarly publishing. While OA models have transformed journal publishing, books face unique hurdles—primarily low volume and the absence of a clear mandate from key stakeholders to streamline workflows. As a partner to OA Switchboard, ibeyond has been involved in this initiative from the start, working to address these challenges. The latest blog post from OA Switchboard explores the key obstacles and potential next steps, including standardizing metadata exchange, improving discoverability, and tackling funding complexities. On this last day of the year we celebrate that in 2024 we reached the milestone of 1 million messages sent, further built the?Data Quality Challenge?with the community and have been conducting the OA Books Pilot. We proudly share our 31 December 2024 statistics with you: >1,125,000 messages?were sent via OA Switchboard since the go-live (1 January 2021) (‘messages’ = standardised sets of publication-level metadata) ? The vast majority were sent by participating publishers to research funders and institutions/consortia to support the?Reporting Made Easy use case?(so-called?P1-messages). In 2024 the number of publishers reporting via the standardised protocol grew from?29 to 36 publishers, with another 5 publishers in the process of going live. ? To date,?18 (national) consortia and multi-site?participants (jointly representing hundreds of sites/members) are connected to OA Switchboard. In addition,?208 individual research institutions/libraries and research funders?have operational accounts in OA Switchboard. In total,?over 29,700 organisations?are set-up to receive messages via OA Switchboard. In 2024, our?participants?continued to build a fantastic community of like-minded spirits focused on a mission. We’re also grateful for our?founding partners,?certified partners (sponsors),?certified integrators, and our?tech partner?for 5 years, and thank them all.
