The many questions around clinical research, development, and access to implantable brain computer interface (iBCI) technologies inspired Jennifer French and other experts in the field to create the iBCI Collaborative Community, to bring in a variety of perspectives into the conversation. The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) has published a report,?“Brain-Computer Interfaces: Applications, Challenges, and Policy Options”?(GAO-25-106952), addressing implantable and wearable BCI systems. It nicely highlights the need and potential for implantable BCIs to benefit individuals with?disabilities.?The report identifies?key policy challenges, including?brain signal data ownership, privacy, long-term device support, and Medicaid/private insurance coverage. The GAO proposes eight policy options?to mitigate these challenges, such as fostering Medicaid-BCI developer coordination and ensuring consumer data control. Members of the iBCI-CC contributed to the report, supporting its mission to promote equitable BCI access, ethical practices, and sustainable user support. https://lnkd.in/eYsR-_Gm
