We joined Mayor Michelle Wu, Friends of O'Day Playground, members of Matthew Meiko Hill's family and the South End community in celebrating the grand reopening of O'Day Playground! This investment in our community and the park brings exciting new play equipment, a splash pad, court upgrades, and improved accessibility — creating a vibrant space for our families and community events. Children from our Early Education Program had the opportunity to cut the ribbon with the Mayor during the special celebration that included unveiling a new memorial plaque and tree planting in honor of Matthew Meiko Hill whose memorial Peace Day Celebration is held in the park annually! Huge thanks to everyone who made this renovation possible, including Klopfer Martin Design Group and Nelm Corp. We can't wait to see residents of our community of all ages enjoy the new and improved outdoor space for years to come!
关于我们
“We shall not move from Parcel 19” IBA is a non-profit organization and a dynamic community-building agency that started in the South End neighborhood of Boston, to address displacement of low-income families due to urban development. IBA offers affordable housing and supportive programming to improve the knowledge, life skills and health of participants of all ages. One of the most important goals of IBA is urban planning. For more than four decades, IBA has facilitated housing that is associated and financed by different supportive programs, while developing leaders who support and encourage themselves, their families and their neighbors. How we started? In 1968, the inhabitants of the Parcel 19 in the South End organized, and with the support of hundreds of protesters, they fought to stop the displacement they were facing. They finally won this battle, which not only allowed their people to keep their homes but also gave them the right to control and develop their community. IBA then developed Villa Victoria, a 435 unit affordable housing community in the city’s South End neighborhood, and it immediately became an example in the areas of civil rights, social organization, affordable housing and arts programs. It is a daily reminder of what it can be achieved with effort, determination and social awareness; the legacy of those brave Puerto Rican activists have been recognized for over four decades and continue to be referenced.

What an incredible forum! Bringing together a panel of of experts?–?including our very own Early Education Program Director Annemarie Castro –?Amplify LatinX and The Boston Foundation helped us gather to discuss the latest trends and challenges in childcare and early education in our state and their impact, particularly for Black and Latino families. Thank you for giving us the chance to come together and shape the future of childcare in our community.
Thank you to Senate President Karen Spilka, our esteemed panel of speakers, and the ALX community for joining us at our Childcare Matters event in partnership with the Latino Equity Fund at The Boston Foundation. In Massachusetts, quality childcare and early education are limited and expensive, particularly for Black and Latino children. Research shows that quality childcare improves educational, social, and economic outcomes—and that those with financial assistance for childcare choose higher quality care than those without it. ? Our Childcare Program focuses on enhancing the business skills of childcare providers, empowering them to run their businesses with a growth-oriented approach and expand their childcare offerings in a sustainable manner. Some highlights from a wonderful musical event exploring Latin American music with the talented Gaby Cotter, who serenaded our Villa Victoria residents with beautiful boleros and traditional music from across Latin America! Residents enjoyed a delicious lunch, raffles, and shared desserts from their home countries. It was a special day filled with meaningful connections with our neighbors as we celebrated together our pride in our amazing and diverse heritage. Huge thanks to Friendship Works and their Music Works program for sponsoring the event. Shoutout to Efrain Nieves for his unforgettable bongo performance, and a big thank you to our amazing Ambassadors, pictured with the staff, for all their support! ??

Congratulations to our CEO, Vanessa Calderon-Rosado, and the entire Latinx Empowerment Council! The work being done to drive real, impactful change for our communities — from advancing health equity to creating more opportunities in housing, education, and economic development — is truly inspiring.
As Chair of the Latinx Empowerment Council for the Governor, I am thrilled to share highlights from our recent event at the people’s house! Yesterday marked a significant moment as we kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month with the Office of Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey’s Latino Empowerment Council presenting our findings and second-year report which included actionable recommendations derived directly from our community dialogues. Our comprehensive report addresses critical areas such as housing, employment opportunities, entrepreneurship support, economic development in Gateway Cities, health equity initiatives, educational advancements, arts and cultural representation, and representation of Latinx communities in government. We are proud to celebrate significant achievements made in collaboration with Governor Healey’s administration over these past seventeen months. These include the implementation of the Workforce Mobility Act (WFMA), the enactment of in-state tuition policies, launching free community college programs for residents aged 25+, signing an Executive Order enhancing language access statewide, passing legislation for affordable housing, and many others. Witnessing our advocacy turn into tangible progress has been incredibly rewarding. As we look to the future, we are filled with hope and optimism. Together with Vice Chair Gladys Vega, council leaders, the MA Latinx community, and administration officials, we are committed to guiding our Latinx community towards even greater prosperity, well-being, and equity. Pa’Lante. Si Se Puede.
