Being Cultured is about adapting, respecting, and truly meeting people where they are. This is a great reminder that what works in one culture may not in another. Cultural awareness isn’t just a 'nice-to-have'; it’s essential for building stronger relationships, whether in business or daily interactions. What’s a cultural difference you’ve encountered that changed your perspective? ??? #CulturalAwareness #BeingCultured #GlobalPerspectives

I’ve had the privilege of training more than 400 people on cultural awareness in less than a year. And I am so glad of everything I have learned. This training has been inspired by the insightful book The Culture Map by Erin Meyer —a book so impactful that we’ve purchased over 40 copies for our company library in both Dutch and English. DAF Trucks NV ???????? ???????? ?? ??????????????? What works in one culture can be a disaster in another. Examples: ?? Communication Styles: In the US, directness is key—“If you didn’t say it, you didn’t communicate it.” In France, much is implied (Sous-entendu: “Don’t listen to what I said, listen to what I meant.”). In Italy, if you make a joke and the other person finds it funny, they laugh openly. In the US, they often just say, “That’s funny.” ?? Giving Feedback: In Norway, constructive criticism is direct—positive feedback is assumed. In the US, people expect three positives for every negative. Imagine the confusion between an American and a Norwegian! ?? Trust: In task-oriented cultures (like Germany or the US), trust is built through competence—“You’re reliable, you deliver on time, I trust you.” In relationship-oriented cultures (like Brazil or China), trust comes from personal connection—“I see who you are beyond work, and now I trust you.” Looking back on my journey, there’s been much trial and error, especially in my early days in international sales. I made many mistakes, but those moments shaped who I am today. For example, I once took a business card from a Korean executive and carelessly placed it in my pocket. I didn’t realize the deep respect attached to such a simple gesture. In Korean culture, presenting and receiving a business card with both hands is a sign of respect, and I missed that opportunity. Another time, working with Germans, I thought bonding over meals would help build relationships. I quickly learned they value directness and getting straight to business, not personal pleasantries. When I first moved to the Netherlands, a colleague sent me a follow-up email summarizing our meeting. As a Spaniard, I thought, "Do they not trust me?" Now, I send those emails regularly. Also, someone once offered me coffee, and I politely declined. I soon realized that in Dutch culture, if you don’t accept the first offer, you likely won’t be asked again. Now, I always say yes! ?????? ???????? ?????????????? Whether you’re negotiating a deal, leading a team, or simply working across cultures, understanding these differences avoids misunderstandings and builds stronger relationships. Cultural awareness isn’t about stereotypes—it’s about recognizing patterns and adapting effectively. If you work in an international environment, learning about cultural differences isn’t a "nice-to-have"—it's a game-changer. What’s the funniest or most surprising cultural difference you’ve encountered at work? Let’s hear your stories! ???? #culturemap #culturalawareness #diversity #DEI #inclusion

As we navigate the evolving landscape of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), clarity is more important than ever. Before exploring its history and impact, we must first define the key terms that shape these discussions. In recent months, DEI has become a topic of debate. Some are stepping away, others are doubling down, and many are watching to see where things go. For some, DEI has been about social capital or corporate strategy, while for others, it was originally a framework for fairness and legal compliance, particularly in ensuring nondiscriminatory practices. In this time of uncertainty, we believe it’s essential to re-examine our “whys” and establish a shared understanding before moving forward. Our latest ???????????????? ????????????????????, ???????????????????? ??????, launches with this very discussion. Join us as we unpack the roots, evolution, and future of DEI. ??? What do these terms mean to you? Let’s start the conversation. #DEI #Diversity #Equity #Inclusion #RethinkingDEI

After 3 years, 8 countries, and 16 case studies, Open Restitution Africa has released its findings and key insights on African restitution processes. Currently, over 1,000,000 known African artefacts are being unwillingly held outside the continent. Of these, less than 1,000 have been returned… Most of this information is not publicly available online and was only shared informally among an often marginalised network of practitioners. ORA’s all-women team of researchers—led by South African fine artist and cultural strategist Molemo Moiloa and celebrated Kenyan historian Chao Tayiana Maina—engaged cultural practitioners, museum professionals, scholars, and artists across Africa to collect primary data on centuries of restitution efforts. Therefore, these resulting case studies, analyses, and resource library bring together, for the first time, a growing data set on centuries of restitution efforts led by African communities, scholars, museum professionals, artists, and policymakers. You can read all the case studies here:

Honored to have attended the 2025 Inclusion Summit, hosted by the North Texas Commission Foundation, as a guest of Linda Valdez Thompson! From Michelle B.’s warm welcome to the thought-provoking panels and Dr. Froswa' Booker’s powerful keynote, every moment was ???????????????????? ???????? ????????. I’ll keep this short (or at least try ??), but the real magic for me? It happened ???? ?????? ????????????????—by the fireplace and ???????? ???????????? ?????????? ?????????? ???? ?????? ????????????????. Those ?????????????????? ?????????????????????????? reminded me why I love these spaces. Sure, they often spark collaboration, but more than that, they keep me grounded. The online world doesn’t always reflect reality. ???????????? ?????? ???????? ???????? ??????????. ?????????? ???????????????????? ???? ?????????????????? ???? ?? ???????????????? ????????. As for key takeaways, I took ?????????????? notes, but here are a few that truly resonated: ?? ?????????????????? ?????????????? ??????????????????’ ?????????? – Don Magner highlighted how the City of Richardson Texas is intentionally engaging all communities. ?? LaTonya Flournoy's ?????????? – Gyna M. Bivens mentioned that inclusion means ?????? voices. More on this soon. ?? ????. ????????????’?? ?????????????? – Hard to pick just one, but I'll go with what she said about ???????????????? ????. ?????????????? social capital. Bonding connects similar people, while bridging builds ties ???????????? race, class, and other differences (if you know about what we do at Cultured., you can guess why this struck a chord ??). ?? Dr. Alise Cortez’s panel – One strong theme was how mentorship is a two-way street, adding value in both directions. Also, learning a bit more about Gabriella A. J. making room for mentorship in the midst of what sounds like an impossible schedule was inspiring. ?? Ruth Villalonga’s session – She gave a masterclass on leveraging personal branding to build meaningful alliances. Grateful for the experience and looking forward to continuing these conversations!
