Join IAFNS and the food and nutrition community as we learn from one of the creators of the Food Compass, Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, Director of the Food is Medicine Institute at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University, Distinguished Professor, Dean Emeritus, and Jean Mayer Professor of Nutrition at the Friedman School, and Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine, as he presents the tool advancements, applications, and future prospects. Tufts University introduced the Food Compass nutrient profiling system in 2021. In an October 2024 Nature Food publication, authors present an update to the system based on new nutritional data and scientific feedback. The Food Compass responds to a need for tools to better distinguish differences in the healthfulness of items that appear to have similar nutrition, reflecting the protective or harmful impacts of specific ingredients, processing methods, nutrients, and bioactive components. The project will address a critical knowledge gap that is needed to assess the potential impacts to human health from exposure to micro- and nanoplastics via ingestion and support regulatory agencies’ decision making. IAFNS supports peer-reviewed scientific papers and convenes experts. IAFNS events and webinars reach thousands of food and nutrition professionals in government, industry, academia and other stakeholder groups. IAFNS mobilizes government, industry, and academia to drive, fund, and lead actionable science in support of public health. IAFNS works to support ongoing collaborative research among food scientists, manufacturers, regulators, and consumers. Working across universities, industry, and government can help ensure that healthier foods do not erode food safety. The intersection of food safety and health is a growing area of focus. While reducing sodium in our diets is a positive step toward better health, it is essential to recognize the food safety implications that come with possible changes. By leveraging alternative preservatives and innovative technologies along with educating consumers, we can find a balance that ensures our food is both healthy and safe.
