I am honored to have been awarded the esteemed Donald J. Cohen Fellowship by the International Association for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Allied Professions (IACAPAP) in recognition of my contributions to academic research and policy efforts aimed at improving accessibility and well-being in child and adolescent mental health. First of all I want to dedicate this award to my father whose unconditional emotional and financial support to my journey never ceases to amaze me. Then to my mentor Prof. Dr. Christina Hoven who believed in me and supported me throughout the process and pushed me through the limits I couldn’t imagine I would have reached! And oh my What a magical ride it has been. As one of the fellow Marie said “Imagine the IQ present in the room now that we are here” The rushing from hotel to symposiums to paper presentations, opening our hearts to the fellows in small working groups to then reflecting in simulations! It was not what I had expected! I came back brimming with more energy, more ideas, and a quest to make change in this world, where every child would have better access to mental healthcare. Excited to share insights from the #IACAPAP2024 poster presentation on school-based mental health and psychosocial interventions for children affected by earthquakes! IACAPAP 1/ ?? Background: Earthquakes in Türkiye, Syria, Afghanistan, and Nepal in 2023 underscored the urgent need for mental health support for affected children. #MentalHealthMatters 2/ ?? Objectives: This review aimed to identify effective MHPSS interventions in schools post-earthquake and understand implementation factors. 3/ ?? Methods: A systematic search identified 12 interventional studies in affected regions. Quality assessed using Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool. 4/ ?? Results: Interventions included psychoeducation, play therapy, and emotional regulation, often led by teachers without specialized training. Duration varied, with psychoeducation common. 5/ ?? Key Interventions: "Emergency Condition" and "Disaster Education" used virtual scenarios for psychoeducation. Teacher-mediated approaches showed effectiveness. 6/ ? Less Effective: Interventions involving parents or caregivers as proxies had mixed outcomes. 7/ ?? Control Groups: Most didn't receive interventions, except for comparisons between different methods. 8/ ?? Conclusion: Teacher-led interventions and psychoeducation enhance children's resilience post-earthquake trauma. Important to involve broader stakeholders and adapt interventions culturally. 9/ ?? Implications: These findings can shape post-disaster guidelines, emphasizing broader stakeholder involvement and cultural adaptation. #Research #ChildPsychology Thanks to all the researchers for their valuable contributions! Let's continue working towards better mental health support for children in crisis. Muhammad Alkasaby #kehaochen #Yuangao
