New IABC APAC chair to showcase communications professionals’ impact in the region Ross Monaghan, an academic based in Melbourne, Australia, will lead the International Association of Business Communicators – Asia-Pacific (IABC APAC) board for 2024–2025. Monaghan heads a board of 11 directors and aims to highlight the extensive work communications professionals do to support businesses and communities in the Asia-Pacific region, which is home to over 60% of the world’s population. “Effective communication is vital in all organisations, and the work our members do plays a crucial, yet largely unrecognised, role in the region’s success,” Monaghan stated. Founded in 1970, IABC has chapters and communities in Australia, New Zealand, India, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia, and the Philippines. IABC APAC’s mission is to provide a platform for communicators to develop their skills and knowledge and to raise awareness of the importance of effective communication. This includes hosting its regional conference, Fusion25, in Manila, Philippines, next year. The opportunities for generative artificial intelligence (AI) in the communications profession are transformative, but many communicators are still unsure how to best leverage AI in their organisations and in the work they do. In this lunch and learn session, IABC APAC has partnered with award-winning business communications house Mahlab’s CEO Cara McLeod and ASEAN business director Gus Wick, who will share a guide to the latest AI tools and practical applications for communicators, and discuss AI risks and pitfalls such as cultural bias and ethical concerns surrounding AI in Asia.
