Over the past year, the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC) has carefully reviewed both our organization standards and existing behavior models as we have been working on moving LIMA. Our goal throughout this process has been to provide our members and the wider industry with standards that emphasize positive interventions focused on what to do rather than restrictive practices that focus on what to avoid or not to do. On March 18th 2025, we published an academic article in the IAABC Foundation journal introducing FREE and The Pathway to Positive Behavior Change. This new framework incorporates the Five Domains Model with an emphasis on the animal’s mental states, the fifth domain to support animal well-being and behavior change.
