I Love Rural Health

Thousands of rural Nebraskans are at a geographic disadvantage when it comes to accessing basic medical care. West Holt Memorial Hospital in rural Atkinson established a mobile clinic to extend the reach of local providers and better serve rural Nebraskans. The mobile clinic serves patients who otherwise may have forgone routine check-ups, screenings and vaccinations. This is the story of how the health care leaders of West Holt Memorial Hospital are improving patient outcomes by breaking down rural health disparities one barrier at a time — all while reducing the likelihood of costly emergency interventions and long-term hospitalizations.

HOSA-Future Health Professionals is a national student organization that equips high school students with valuable knowledge, skills, leadership training and hands-on experiences in health care settings. This is especially important in rural Nebraska communities such as Scottsbluff, where the health care workforce dwindles with each decade. In many remote areas of the state, access to immediate medical care and various specialties is never guaranteed. This is the story of how HOSA is empowering the next generation of health leaders in Scottsbluff — and, in doing so, fueling the sustainable future of rural health care in communities across Nebraska.

In 2024, Friend Community Healthcare System seized the opportunity to qualify for the federal government’s brand new Rural Emergency Hospital (REH) designation. Still one of just a handful in America, this hospital has embraced the REH model to increase access to local care and forge meaningful regional partnerships. Integral to Friend’s success story is the dedication of the hospital’s leadership and support from the community. This is the story of Friend Community Healthcare System and, more importantly, the people who have taken proactive measures to ensure a sustainable future of health care for local patients.
