Twelve years ago today, we deployed a storm surge sensor near Waveland, MS, just before Hurricane Isaac, a Category 1 storm, made landfall. Nicknamed “eyeSPY”, we developed this prototype sensor under Hyperion’s first SBIR grant, sponsored by NOAA. The sensor recorded a storm surge of about 8 feet and wind speeds of over 80 mph before it was inundated. Joining us was Tim Samaras, a renowned engineer, storm chaser, and National Geographic Research Scientist, best known for his tornado research and appearances on Discovery Channel's Storm Chasers. During the deployment, we were with Tim as he conducted several live media interviews from our vehicle on The Weather Channel and CNN. Tim was tragically killed in a tornado in El Reno, OK, in May 2013, along with his son Paul and friend Carl.
