In another recent adventure with the New York Landmarks Conservancy, my colleagues and I visited St. Paul’s German Evangelical Lutheran Church in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood. Dating back to 1897, the building was designed in the neo-Gothic style by German-born architect Francis Minuth. The limestone façade is interspersed with piers and spires, and has two asymmetrical, octagonal towers with copper-clad spires above. The gable end contains a gothic-arch window with stone tracery set underneath a Lombardy-band cornice. The spectacular sanctuary interior is mostly intact, and features original wood pews and altar fittings, and at least three stained glass windows by Meyer of Munich dating from the era. Among the interior’s many pleasing features is the pipe organ custom-built for the space by the New York City firm of Jardine & Son. The two-manual mechanical-action organ has 27 registers totalling 29 ranks, and a stencilled facade that includes pipes of the Great Double Open Diapason. An attached keydesk with terraced stop jambs controls the instrument, aided by seven combination pedals and a balanced Swell pedal. Jardine also provided a double-draw stopknob in the Swell for the 8' Voix Celeste: when the knob is partially pulled, only the sharp (celeste) rank is activated, but when the knob is fully pulled, a pneumatic action engages the unison (8' Viole d'Orchestre) rank, which is perhaps a challenge to the player as it is located on the row below. St. Paul’s, like so many other historic buildings in New York, needs a bit of TLC to keep serving the community for another 100 years.
