Back in September, the Community Strategies Group of Aspen Institute invited me to spend two days with peers exploring the systems and best practices for more effective and sustainable Rural Development Hubs and considering the rural development role our community foundation plays in Reno County. I didn’t know then that accepting the invitation for a March visit to D.C. would fall during such a volatile time. After a thought-provoking two-day conference on Rural Development Hubs, I took the opportunity to go to The Hill to see Senator Moran, Representative Mann, and a staff member from Senator Marshall’s office. I was able to share the effects federal funding cuts, freezes, layoffs, and other uncertainties cause in our communities. I emphasized that the private sector and community philanthropy, while valuable, cannot fill the gap left by the resources, programs, and expertise traditionally provided by the federal government. I asked each leader to support the Charitable Act (S.317, H.R.801) to incentivize charitable giving for non-itemizers and to look for opportunities in the new tax bill to make charitable giving easier, not harder--especially now, at a time when our rural communities face more hardship and less resources. #CommunityPhilanthropy?#RuralDevelopment #CharitableGiving #PublicPrivatePartnership #FederalFunding #PolicyAdvocacy
