??♀? Women in Construction Month Spotlight: Jamie Steenbock At Hurckman, we’re celebrating the women in our company who are making an impact in the trades. Jamie Steenbock is a Sheet Metal Pre-Apprentice with Local 18 Union, and she has been part of our team for 10 months. Jamie’s career path wasn’t always clear. In high school, she explored a variety of electives—including vet science, woodworking, and welding—before realizing that working with metal was what she enjoyed most. After graduating, she enrolled in Northeast Wisconsin Technical College’s welding program, which ultimately led her to Hurckman. Now, she’s focused on continuing in the sheet metal trade, moving into a full apprenticeship program, and eventually becoming a journeyman. She loves the work itself, but more than anything, she enjoys the people and the atmosphere in the shop. "It doesn’t feel like work—it feels like I’m just doing a project with a bunch of buddies," she says. While she enjoys the fast-paced nature of the job, it also presents a challenge. As a perfectionist, she holds herself to a high standard, wanting to make sure every weld and detail meets expectations. At the same time, she’s learning to balance the seniority structure in the shop—making sure she respects experienced workers while also having the confidence to do things the right way. Being a woman in the trades has been a positive experience for Jamie. "I fit in well, and my personality fits here," she explains. While she occasionally has to remind others that she's strong enough to handle the work just like anyone else, she feels supported and respected by her team. ??♀? Women in Construction Month Spotlight: Autumn Gable At Hurckman, we’re celebrating the women who are making their mark in the trades. Autumn Gable is a Youth Apprentice with Plumbers & Steamfitters Local 400 who started with us in January after graduating high school early. She has been with Hurckman for three months and is already focused on building a long-term career in the trades. Coming from a family deeply rooted in the industry, Autumn always knew she wanted to work with her hands. She spent her childhood helping on her cousin’s farm, working with her grandpa’s excavator company, and learning from her mom, a civil engineer. With many family members in the union, the trades felt like the natural path for her. Now, she hopes to earn an apprenticeship, become a journeyman plumber, and eventually step into a foreman role. She’s drawn to plumbing because it blends both pipefitting and plumbing, making it the best of both worlds. However, there are challenges. Since she’s not in the field yet, visualizing how the parts she builds in the shop will come together in a real installation can be difficult. Without seeing the final product firsthand, it can sometimes be hard to picture how everything fits. Being a woman in the trades has been a unique experience for Autumn. While she feels supported by her coworkers, she has noticed that skepticism about women in construction often comes from people outside the industry, rather than from those she works with. Her advice to other women considering a career in the trades? "Don’t be scared—just go out and chase your dreams. Go out and do it, and don’t let people stop you."
