Co-Founder and Executive Director at Hunters of Color

Dear Colleagues, I’m excited to share that Hunters of Color is launching our first national capital fundraiser, and I’d like to tell you why this initiative is so close to my heart. Growing up in the Bay Area, I was fortunate to experience a vibrant mix of cultures and communities. However, as I became more involved in hunting and conservation, I noticed a stark lack of diversity in these spaces. This realization drove me to co-found Hunters of Color, with the mission of addressing the underrepresentation of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) in hunting and conservation. Our mission is to advance connections, access, and opportunities for BIPOC communities in these areas. We believe that fostering education, mentorship, and community-building can deepen the connection to the land, promote sustainability, and cultivate the next generation of conservationists. With your support, we can continue to provide essential resources, break down barriers, and create a more inclusive outdoor community. Our goal is to raise $250k over the next three months, and every contribution brings us closer to achieving this vision. As a token of appreciation, donations of $25 or more will be entered into our monthly raffle. This month’s prizes include a Christensen Arms Rifle and an Argali ultralight 4-person tent. I invite you to join us in making a significant impact. Please consider donating and sharing this initiative within your networks. Your support will help us build a more diverse, equitable, and sustainable future for the hunting and conservation community. Donate here: https://lnkd.in/gadWZ_WG Thank you for your support and commitment to this important cause. Best regards, Jimmy Flatt Co-Founder & Executive Director Hunters of Color #HuntersOfColor #DiversityInOutdoors #Conservation #Sustainability #Fundraiser #BIPOCRepresentation #Mentorship #CommunityBuilding

Every MLK day, we’re struck by how many people quote him while simultaneously denying the liberation of others. It is important to remember that MLK was hated by many in his time, and revered only after his martyrdom. Those who quote him today may very well be the same people who would have called him a “communist,” a “radical,” and an “America hater” back then. Today, when people in the greater hunting community use these terms to describe HOC, we know we are doing something right! ???? This is an important reminder for all of us at the beginning of this new year. Who are the MLKs today in your world that your actions might be stifling? Whose voices are you uplifting? Who are you speaking over? Who are you telling “just be patient” while they yearn for justice? On your next hunt, consider these questions. Read “Letter From a Birmingham City Jail.” Don’t let the truth of Dr. King’s message be whitewashed by niceties. Blessed are those who work toward peace in spite of it all— including those who have dedicated their time to making sure “The Outdoors are for Everyone.” Thank you to our staff, volunteers, ambassadors, and mentors for doing this invaluable work.
