Universal free school meals are a proven strategy to reduce hunger, while also supporting learning, improving physical and mental health, and bolstering student success. With nearly 1 in 5 children in our state facing hunger, New York's kids need this now more than ever. New York can ensure all students have equal access to free school meals. Eight states, including our neighbors Vermont and Massachusetts, have established permanent, statewide universal free school meal programs. New York must do the same. November is National Caregivers Month—a time to highlight the caregivers who work hard to care for the children in their lives. WIC makes it even easier to do that! Primary caregivers, like dads, grandparents, and foster parents, can apply for WIC for their children under age five to get healthy food, nutrition education, and more.
