"It's going to harm local farmers, harm students' health and increase child hunger. This policy makes no sense. It's going to make the state hungrier, it's going to eventually possibly raise school taxes because the local schools will pick up the slack on federal funding," Hunger Free America CEO Joel Berg said. https://lnkd.in/eUinA_SY
关于我们
HUNGER FREE AMERICA (formerly known as the New York City Coalition Against Hunger) is a national nonprofit group building a nonpartisan, grass-roots membership movement to enact the policies and programs needed to end domestic hunger and ensure that all Americans have sufficient access to nutritious food. Our long term goal is not just to ameliorate the problem, but to build the people’s movement necessary to enact the economic and public policies needed to end hunger entirely. U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand said: "The work that NYCCAH does to fight against food insecurity is so important to our communities, and I am proud to have partnered with them over the years to help protect vital food benefits and ensure families at risk have access to food. Hunger Free America will continue NYCCAH's legacy by pushing for innovative, effective ways to end hunger, like the new hunger volunteer website and the hunger hotline. I look forward to working with Hunger Free America to help families in New York and across the country put food on the table." Congressman Jim McGovern, co-chair of the bipartisan Congressional Hunger Caucus said: “Every day across this country, millions of America families struggle to put food on the table. The only way we can change this is by building strong coalitions of national, state, and local leaders to stand up for these families and I know that Hunger Free America will be a powerful part of that work. I've had the pleasure of working with NYCCAH over the years and I have no doubt Hunger Free America will continue their passionate work to give a voice to families in need and end hunger across this county. I look forward to working with Hunger Free America."

Joel Berg of Hunger Free America told Playbook of SNAP, “If anything close to this magnitude of cuts is actually implemented, it would lead to the greatest hunger and food insecurity crisis since the Great Depression.” He added that having the cuts be “one of things the mayor of New York City feels he cannot speak out against is very troubling as a citizen.” https://lnkd.in/efVWp6MS

Marie Maynard Daly was the first African-American to receive a Ph.D. from Columbia University and the first Black woman in the United States to earn a Ph.D. in chemistry. She and her colleagues did some of the earliest work relating diet to the health of the cardiac and circulatory systems. She was the first to establish that hypertension was a precursor to atherosclerosis and the first to identify a relationship between cholesterol and clogged arteries. #BlackHistoryMonth

A Montgomery cafeteria worker, midwife, and single mother, Georgia Gilmore fed and funded activists in Montgomery - often in secret. Throughout the Montgomery Bus Boycott, Gilmore organized black women to cook and sell food to Black owned beauty salons, cab stands, and in Black churches. The money raised paid for the alternative transportation system that arose out of the 381-day Montgomery Bus Boycott. #BlackHistoryMonth

In 1968, Shirley Chisholm became the first Black woman to serve in the U.S. Congress. Recognizing that accessing Food Stamps posed unique challenges for pre- and postpartum mothers, she helped to develop the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). #BlackHistoryMonth #HungerFreeAmerica source: The Hunger Museum
