How does NaCl addition trigger liquid-liquid phase separation near polymer-capped nanoparticles? Alejandra Londo?o Calderón, Tanya Prozorov, and their colleagues at Ames National Laboratory, Iowa State University, and the University of Chicago used their Hummingbird Scientific in-situ liquid flow TEM sample holder (https://lnkd.in/guhTaK9) to investigate liquid-liquid phase separation and interfacial crystallization in pNIPAM polymer-capped Au nanoparticles after introduction of NaCl under in-situ TEM. Upon addition of NaCl, the density increase of the solution prompts a liquid-liquid phase separation that confines the polymer to the low-density and salt-deficient phase. The pNIPAM-capped Au nanoparticles follow this interface and reside on the surface of polymer-filled globes. These decorated globes are buoyant and escape to the air-water interface, collapse, and form hexagonal crystalline domains with NaCl concentration-dependent size. The study advances understanding of amphiphilic polymers and their role in bioinspired design and synthesis of functional nanostructures. See the comments below for a link to the full paper. ?? How does metal interlayer material affect solid-state battery performance? Dong-Su Ko, Changhoon Jung, and their colleagues at Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology, Bruker Korea, and Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science published work using their Hummingbird Scientific in-situ biasing nano-manipulator TEM sample holder (https://lnkd.in/geDiZXq) to characterize lithium plating and stripping mechanisms in metal-interlayer-inserted anode-less solid-state lithium metal batteries (AL-SS-LMBs). With all metals but Ag, Li plating at the Li-metal alloy/solid electrolyte interface prevented effective alloying and stabilization of plating/stripping processes. The Ag interlayer improved the interfacial stability by dissolving some Li and forming a solid solution, inhibiting unstable dendrite growth in the phase separated Li-Ag alloy microstructure. The work advances fundamental understanding of material selection for solid-state battery interlayer design to accelerate the development of solid-state batteries.
