This International Women’s Day, it’s time to Accelerate Action. ? According to the latest Census, 53,974 women were experiencing homelessness in Australia—a 10.1% increase since 2016. These aren’t just statistics; they represent women who have fled domestic violence, faced financial instability, or struggled against systemic barriers that have left them without a safe place to call home. ? We believe that safe and secure housing is a fundamental right and a key step toward gender equality. That’s why we’re taking real action. Our latest development in Parramatta will deliver 66 new homes, prioritising women and children escaping domestic violence, older women at risk of homelessness, and essential frontline workers. In Port Stephens, we’re also building the first Core and Cluster domestic violence refuge in the area, providing six independent units with wrap-around support services to help women and children recover and rebuild their lives in safety. With funding from Housing Australia and the NSW Government, these projects will provide stability, security, and a fresh start for those who need it most.? ? This year’s International Women’s Day theme, “Accelerate Action”, is a call to do more, faster. At the current pace, full gender equality could take over 130 years—but we can’t wait that long. Housing security is a critical piece of the puzzle, and real change happens when we invest in solutions that empower women, break cycles of disadvantage, and create opportunities for stability and independence. ? Gender equality starts with action. This International Women’s Day let’s commit to solutions that ensure every woman has a safe place to call home. ? #InternationalWomensDay #AccelerateAction #HousingForWomen #GenderEquality #SafeHomesSafeFutures #IWD2025 Laura Pollard, Effie Fox, Victor Prasad, Sean Parker, Meagan Prabhakar, Stephanie Campbell

It’s been a big and exciting few weeks here at Hume and we’re just getting started! Brad Braithwaite
Construction has begun on Port Stephens' Core and Cluster domestic violence refuge for women and children. $7.2 million is being invested in the new six-unit refuge developed by Hume Community Housing. But a foundation of care has already been laid thanks to Barbara Tobin (pictured) and the women of Karuah Aboriginal Community who have been crafting comforting soft furnishings, such as towels and doona covers for future residents. Barbara says many members of the Karuah Women's Sewing and Yarning Group have also had their lives impacted by domestic and family violence and feel privileged to contribute to a refuge that will help women and children escaping those situations. Brad Braithwaite, CEO of Hume Housing said: “Breaking ground today is just the beginning as we look towards providing a safe place for women and children fleeing domestic and family violence. This is central to Hume’s purpose: to create homes and opportunities for people to heal, rebuild and prosper in vibrant and connected communities.”
