We're the sole statewide promoter of the public humanities in NYS. Join us for grants, discussions, events!
关于我们
HNY strengthens civil society and the bonds of community, using the humanities to foster engaged inquiry and dialogue around social and cultural concerns. Founded in 1975, Humanities New York is the sole statewide proponent of public access to the humanities. HNY is a private 501(c)3 that receives Federal, State, and private funding. What does it mean to be human? This question has given rise to the fields known collectively as “the humanities,” which examine what humans have created, debated, done and believed throughout the millennia. The skills and methods of the humanities—reading, analysis, discussion, critical thinking; about history, ideas, arts, texts—help connect us to one another and to lead meaningful lives.

Earlier this week, as part of the?Incorrigibles project, a memorial ceremony was held to honor the young women and infants buried in the long-overlooked cemetery on the grounds of the Hudson Correctional Facility, which was formerly the site of The House of Refuge for Women (1887-1904) and The NY State Training School for Girls (1904-1975). Thanks to a grant from?Humanities New York, Alison Cornyn and I were able to document the ceremony, which included a dance performance by the extraordinary?Amanda Krische.

Congrats to Post-Incarceration Humanities Partnership (PIHP) cohort-members All Kings for being spotlit in a powerful piece in the Times. ?? HNY is a proud supporter of All Kings' "Nature Quests." Journalist Joseph Bernstein—who accompanied a recent trip—describes the gist of the experience and the origins behind the unique organization's name: ""The Nature Quest, like other men’s work programs, enacts a series of dramatic, sometimes emotionally harrowing, rituals over three days. By the end, each initiate should be able to tap into a stronger, kinder and more purposeful version of himself — his “king,” an archetype drawn from the work of the psychoanalyst Carl Jung, who looms large in this world. (Hence “All Kings.”)" Read the full piece here! https://lnkd.in/ezNhCJWB
