?? 2024 is now humanitarians' deadliest year on record, driven by the war in Gaza. 281 aid workers have been killed, more than any year before. “States and parties to conflict must protect humanitarians, uphold international law, prosecute those responsible, and call time on this era of impunity,” urges Tom Fletcher CMG, United Nations relief chief. As the demand for humanitarian assistance continues to outpace supply, the aid sector finds itself increasingly overwhelmed. In this feature, Abby Stoddard, founding partner at Humanitarian Outcomes, presents a compelling look at the data and highlights the significant shifts in the humanitarian landscape over the past decade.? "When war breaks out or a major natural disaster occurs, they join an already long list of ongoing 'chronic crises' to which humanitarian agencies and donors are responding. These include complex emergencies—like those in Afghanistan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, and South Sudan—which have seen coordinated emergency response plans year after year, going back decades. The result is a compounding list of emergency responses," writes Stoddard. Through crucial analysis and a keen look at the data, Stoddard sheds light on the growing number of complex humanitarian emergencies, the funding landscape, and the alarming rise in the number of aid workers killed. Her work highlights the urgent need for reform and innovation.?? ? Read more in the fall ‘24 issue of the Wilson Quarterly: Confronting Unprecedented Humanitarian Needs.? https://lnkd.in/gtFb2x2M

Read HO Partner Abby Stoddard's contribution to the latest Wilson Quarterly on the numbers behind humanitarian response - "Over the past decade, humanitarian emergencies have grown in number, size, and severity, placing increasing strain on the international aid system, which has not kept pace in terms of financial and human resources to effectively respond.?Humanitarian response has also become increasingly deadly for aid workers, who are often denied the protections prescribed to them under international humanitarian law."
OUT NOW! Confronting Unprecedented Humanitarian Needs The fall 2024 Wilson Quarterly explores the complexities of humanitarian response in an era of escalating crises. With insights from sector leaders, we analyze funding, innovation, and the challenges ahead. Framing the issue are: The Wilson Center's CEO Ambassador Mark Green, whose introduction reflects on his experiences leading USAID, a look at the numbers with Founding Partner of Humanitarian Outcomes, Abby Stoddard, and a lively discussion moderated by former USAID assistant to the administrator for the Bureau for Conflict Prevention and Stabilization Rob Jenkins, in conversation with former UN Deputy Secretary General for Humanitarian Coordination Jamie McGoldrick, and ICVA Board Chair Nimo Hassan, who analyze the new world disorder. We hear from leaders past and present including Amy Pope from IOM - UN Migration, Fabrizio Carboni of International Committee of the Red Cross - ICRC, and Andrew Natsios, formerly of USAID. We look at #mentalhealth in Ukraine with International Medical Corps, maternal and newborn health with Sarah Barnes, MPH and members of the Inter-Agency Working Group on Reproductive Health in Crises, the realities when conflict and climate meet with Lauren Herzer Risi and Syed Imran Ali, innovative community approaches with the Sudan Emergency Response Rooms (with Aaron Stanley) and Robert Hokanson of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and #tech innovations with Keller Rinaudo Cliffton of Zipline.
