  • Meet David B. Berenson, LSW ? After working many years in colleges, universities, and K-12 schools, where he had to learn and re-imagine several counseling techniques learned to work with adults to use helping younger children and teens, David (he/him) joined us at Humanistic Counseling Center. David has been a part of our team since 2021 and works with clients of all ages including kids, adults, couples, and families. His areas of expertise include stress and anxiety management, wellness, and conflict resolution. Perhaps his greatest specialty, though, is his ability to guide clients in relaxation, at times even to the point of falling asleep! David’s favorite technique is Interactive Guided imagery because of its versatility with various ages and types of healing. David prefers to work in-person in our Lyndhurst office, but he happily provides telehealth services as well. David shares he is happy to be with HCC and has found meaning in all of the ways in which he is able to help others. Outside of work, David is interested in theater, organic garden, and playing several sports. We are so lucky to have David as part of our team!

  • Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. “The triennial theme for World Suicide Prevention Day for 2024-2026 is "Changing the Narrative on Suicide" with the call to action "Start the Conversation". This theme aims to raise awareness about the importance of reducing stigma and encouraging open conversations to prevent suicides. Changing the narrative on suicide is about transforming how we perceive this complex issue and shifting from a culture of silence and stigma to one of openness, understanding, and support.” -The World Health Organization Humanistic Counseling Center strives to be a part of the conversation on suicide and suicide prevention. Throughout the month of September, which serves as Suicide Prevention Month, we aim to help shift public perception, spread hope, and share resources for suicide prevention. If you or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of suicide, call or text 988. You can also text “HOPE” to 741-741, or go to the nearest emergency room for immediate support.

  • June is also Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month! A big obstacle in men’s mental health awareness is the stigma. Men often receive messages that they have to be “strong” and that showing emotions or asking for help is a sign of weakness. It is crucial to know the signs of mental health struggles and end the stigma that stops men from getting help. Remember, Men’s Mental Health Month is just one part of the ongoing effort to prioritize mental health for everyone. It is necessary to continue the conversation and support men’s mental well-being all year long — not just in June.

  • Happy Pride Month from HCC! ?? We are dedicated to supporting the well-being of lesbian, bisexual, gay, transgender, and queer people. LGBTQ+ people experience higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. Despite these alarmingly high rates, LGBTQ+ people face gaps in receiving adequate mental health care. Check out these free mental health resources for LGBTQ+ adults and youth. For more support, contact Humanistic Counseling Center to be connected with one of our many LGBTQ+ affirming therapists or a therapist trained to write letters for gender-affirming care according to WPATH standards!
