Regular vet check-ups aren’t just about vaccines— they can also help catch health issues early! Here’s what our veterinarian, Dr. Gutierrez, recommends: -Annual heartworm tests: Even if your pet is on prevention, yearly testing ensures they’re heartworm-free. -Full bloodwork panels: Checking kidney & liver function gives a baseline for your pet’s health, making it easier to spot changes over time. -Feline leukemia & FIV testing: These viruses can be passed from cat to cat (or mother to kittens) and affect the immune system causing serious issues. Prevention and routine screening are the best ways to keep your pet healthy, happy, and by your side for years to come! Meet the timeless beauty— Antoinette! Five-year-old Antoinette’s life didn’t start the way it should have— she was abandoned outside, left to fend for herself. Despite her past, she is hopeful for a future where she is cherished as someone’s one and only fur friend. At just 7 pounds, she’s a perfectly petite lap companion who enjoys being brushed and doted on. She’s affectionate, gentle, and loves a good conversation. She was made to be someone’s forever companion! Antoinette deserves a home where she’ll never be left behind again. Could that be with you? Introducing a cat and dog? Our Director of Animal Behavior and Training, Bill Berloni, shares what you need to know! Whether you're introducing a dog to a cat or a cat to a dog, patience and structure are key to making the process as successful as possible. -If you’re bringing a dog into a cat’s space: Start by setting up a safe zone where your cat can observe from a distance without feeling threatened. Let them make the decision to approach when (or if) they feel comfortable. -If you have a dog and are bringing in a cat: Start small! Set up a “cat kingdom” in a closed room. Let them hide, explore, and get comfortable before gradually introducing them through a gate. Over time, they’ll gain confidence and decide when (or if) to interact. The most important part? Supervision. Never let the animals try to figure it out alone. Creating safe, controlled introductions helps them build trust and ease into their new relationships. #catlover #doglover #cats #dogs #training #trainer #dogtraining #dogtrainer #petcare #pets #catsanddogs #animalwelfare #nonprofit #lovecats #lovedogs

We would like to take a moment to remember one of our own, the kind of dog who we each thought loved us the most. (And if you kept treats in your pockets, you were probably right.) Lila, our petite terrier-mix passed away shortly after her 13th birthday. Lila was surrendered to us, along with her son, because her home had too many dogs Though her son was adopted quickly, it took longer to find Lila a home. Lila was eventually placed with a lovely, quiet lady who was looking for a dog to dote on and be her companion. Lila fit the bill. The two met several times to bond during our adoption process, and the day we brought Lila home she walked proudly out the door. Her new companion stayed in touch with us, and we were delighted to get updates and pictures of Lila lounging in her many favorite spots. After a couple of years together the woman’s health suddenly declined and she was no longer able to live on her own. She had to go into an assisted living facility, and unfortunately as is often the case, dogs were not allowed. It broke her heart to call and tell us the news. She thanked us for the joy that Lila brought to her life. We thanked her for giving Lila such a loving home. Lila returned to us and received a hero’s welcome. We were beginning to receive new adoption applications for Lila and were interviewing potential homes. Then one day we noticed that her breathing seemed off. Our doctors did a thorough work-up and discovered a mass on one of her lungs. When supportive care was no longer helping, we knew we had to let her go. She was now struggling to breathe and we did not want her to suffer. Lila was featured on our social media as recently as Valentine’s Day, as we were still looking for her next home. We love and miss you Lila. You will always be our Valentine. #rainbowbridge #foreverloved #inlovingmemory #gonebutnotforgotten #foreverinourhearts #restinpeace #rescuedog #wemissyou

When Beryl adopted Harriet, she expected the usual acclimation process—some timidness, curiosity, and time to settle in. But on day one, Harriet surprised her by climbing onto her chest, curling up, and falling asleep. She knew she was home. Not only did she make herself right at home, but she also made it clear that, for her, mealtime is a shared experience. She loves having Beryl close by, enjoying pets while she dines and they chat about their day. While some bonds take time, others, are formed instantly. For Harriet? There was no doubt Beryl was her person— and she was finally home. #happytails #adoptdontshop #adopt #rescue #rescuecat #tortie #tortiecat #foreverhome #adoptacat #savealife #animalwelfare #nonprofit #catadoption

Buford had a family once until unfortunately— they didn’t come back for him. After a surgery he needed, his owners stopped answering calls, leaving him at the vet with nowhere to go. He waited, but no one came. Then we stepped in, and Buford has been a sweet and friendly face around HSNY ever since. Despite being abandoned, Buford doesn’t dwell on the past. He prefers to keep his sights set on finding a family who will treasure him and return the loyalty he so freely gives. Buford has proven what we already knew: he’s resilient, a lover, and a cat who deserves so much more than to be overlooked. He’s affectionate, playful, and happiest when he’s the center of attention. Which he deserves! Other cats? Not really a fan. Humans? Absolutely. He’ll follow you around, curl up beside you, and remind you every day why choosing him was the best decision you ever made. Could you be the one to show Buford that he’s unforgettable? After a nice long walk, he will happily curl up next to you and daydream about his next adventure. Being as handsome as he is needs a little upkeep, but daily brushing and regular grooming will keep him camera-ready. Rex is super-sweet, gentle and very eager to please. He loves learning new tricks and will happily show off his skills to his adoring audience. Are you ready to get off the couch and play? Barrymore has come a long way since the NYPD brought him to us just a few months ago. Abandoned on the cold streets of Brooklyn, he was utterly exhausted, his ribs protruding, covered in mats and dirt, no collar, no microchip, no sign that he had ever belonged to someone who cared. We’ll never know how long he was out there, only that he survived against the odds. Barrymore’s story could have ended badly, but fate had other plans. With time, an extensive medical workup with associated procedures, consistent nutrition, compassion, attention, care and love, this 8-year-old Terrier/Poodle mix has made such a transformation. He has traded fear for joy, abandonment for belonging, and heartbreak for hope. Barrymore is affectionate, curious, and loves his walks—especially when they lead to a well-earned nap. His past may be unknown, but his future is wide open! Could you be the one to show him what forever really means? We’re on the cusp of spring, friends! With warmer days ahead, there’s nothing better than hitting the trails or enjoying a scenic picnic with your pup. Dr. Rubinstein shares how the fresh air and warmer weather can also bring with it some unwelcomed guests— ticks! These hitchhikers, though small in size, can have a large impact! They can transmit serious diseases like Lyme, Ehrlichiosis, and Anaplasmosis, which can cause painful joints, fever, and even anemia. The sooner you remove a tick, the lower the risk of disease—so knowing how to do it safely is key. Using a gauze pad, gently rock it back and forth to remove it—never yank, or you risk leaving the head behind. If you’re unsure, your vet can help! Be sure to also stay up-to-date on your dog’s annual heartworm test which checks for tick-borne illnesses and ask your veterinarian about monthly flea and tick prevention medications. So, enjoy the beautiful weather and all your favorite outdoor adventures this spring, but don’t forget to give your pup a thorough tick check after every outing! #veterinarian #ticks #spring #springtime #outdoors #adventure #pethealth #petcare #dogcare #doghealth #outdooradventures #adventuredog #hiking #picnic

But when she passed away, Ricardo’s world changed. Now, he is waiting for someone who understands that trust isn’t instant, but it’s worth the patience. Someone who will let him adjust on his own terms, knowing that the reward is a companion who will always want to be by your side.
