Since its formation in 1946, the United Nations (UN) has advocated for the protection of women’s rights. However, women’s rights have improved more through national activist movements than by international pressure from UN adopted human rights legislation such as?the Convention on Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). In contrast, Rwanda’s commitment to CEDAW was improved through international pressure, domestic politics, and was directly related to the trauma of the Rwandan Genocide, which separates it from feminist movements. Indonesia’s parliament has passed a contentious revision to the military law, expanding the armed forces' role in civilian affairs, despite strong opposition from democracy activists and students. Human rights organizations, democracy advocates, and international bodies must urgently call on the Indonesian government to uphold democratic principles by preventing military overreach into civilian affairs and ensuring governance remains free from authoritarian influence. The murder of Pamela Mabini is a stark reminder about the risks that activists and pursuers of truth and justice face in contemporary South Africa. As a fearless human rights advocate and Director of the Maro Foundation, Mabini played a central role in uncovering corruption stemming from televangelist Timothy Omotoso’s activities. However, Mabini’s death emphasizes the dire state of whistleblower protections in South Africa. People who challenge corruption face continuous harassment and threats, and many are killed as a result of their actions.?Learn more in Aisha Noor's latest news brief: https://lnkd.in/eMjQSthD #humanrights #legalprotections #corruption
