This spring break, Georgetown University Law Center students had the chance to make a real-world impact by participating in the Greenpeace Trial Monitoring Project, led by?HRI Distinguished Fellow Wade McMullen. This project was an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in trial monitoring while helping to ensure transparency and fairness in the legal process. Students assisted in observing the?Energy Transfer v. Greenpeace International?trial in North Dakota, a case that some experts are calling a strategic lawsuit against public participation, also known as a SLAPP. “I was honored to be part of this important project as a student. Analyzing such a complicated and politicized trial taught me so much about attorney strategy as well as trial procedure, and how one can interfere with the other when the right protections aren't in place,” said Anastasia Bekker (L’27) on the experience. HRI's Human Rights Advocacy in Action Practicum enlists students in tackling real-world human rights challenges and creates a learning environment that equips students to analyze a problem, assess the legal and policy situation, and propose and execute strategies for change. Check out what GULC students have accomplished in this year's practicum! Hats off to Maria Eduarda Castro Leme Basso, Audrey Kuchio, Natasha Panduwawala, Pia Siebert, Cameron Witbeck, Elizabeth Ratcliffe, Kylie Swinmurn, Fernanda Bustamante Fla?o, Jennifer Campos, Anna Wells, Siona Sharma, and Danielle M. for all their hard work!
In partnership with the Institute for Justice & Democracy in Haiti (IJDH), the Human Rights Institute at Georgetown Law (HRI) embarked on a field investigation in Paris, Nassau, and New York City to explore avenues to advance Haiti’s case for restitution for the “independence debt” as part of the 2024-2025 Human Rights Advocacy in Action Practicum. HRI’s practicum team is developing litigation and advocacy strategies to secure restitution for the unjust debt imposed on Haiti 200 years ago by France, and exploited by French and American banks for more than a century, which crippled the young state and set the stage for today's security crisis. For generations, Haiti has paid this so-called “independence debt” to the descendants of its former enslavers, a ransom for freedom that amounted to hundreds of millions of dollars. To aid in the development of an advocacy campaign for restitution of this debt, HRI’s Practicum team spent part of winter break in cities across the world conducting interviews with advocates, scholars, and legal experts on reparations. Students worked closely with IJDH’s co-founder and executive director Brian Concannon, L’89, and IJDH’s senior staff attorney Alexandra “Sasha” Filippova, L’13, to identify key actors to interview on their field investigation. Save the date! The next panel in the Transitional Justice in the USA Speakers Series is coming up! For full event details and to register:?https://lnkd.in/ep5jzVX3 Since 2021 the nation has witnessed a remarkable growth of reparation initiatives spearheaded by local and state governments with the hope of healing the deep harms arising out of racial injustice in its many forms. This panel will offer an overview of this development to explore how it offers valuable opportunities for individual and societal repair, while also understanding the challenges of ensuring adequate and effective reparations in the United States. In particular, panelists will explore issues related to questions of how to fund these programs, who should qualify as “victims”, what type of reparations should be prioritized, why conflict undermines the process of repair, among other concerns. Comparative international experiences will shed light on what can truly be expected from non-judicial reparation programs as well as offer reflection on what helps make these programs successful, while also reflecting on what makes the U.S. experience unique.
