Monique ‘Muffie’ Mosseau and Felipa De Leon are co-founders of Uniting Resilience, an organization dedicated to restoring and celebrating the integral part of Two-Spirit relatives within the Native Community. Their story, and the stories of other Two-Spirit Natives, is one of resilience. In a collaboration with UnitingResilience, HRC attorneys conducted field visits to Rapid City, South Dakota, participating in listening circles and bearing witness to retelling details of violence and discrimination experienced by Natives, in particular those who are Two-Spirit. Transgender veterans share the same commitment and the same love of country as all other veterans. They made the same sacrifices and are owed the same respect and care after their service. Despite this, the VA has decided to turn its back on transgender veterans who committed their lives to serving in our armed forces—complying with an Administration hellbent on harming and scapegoating the transgender community. We must continue to stand up for our transgender servicemembers and veterans. We must push back against these attacks until our nation’s policies reflect the values of honor, respect, and duty that our transgender veterans embody.
Over the last two months, transgender Americans have experienced systematic attempts to erase their identities and strip them of their rights. Veterans have been impacted by mass firings, gutting of the VA, and some lawmakers pushing for benefits cuts. Today's press release from the VA furthers this discrimination by cherrypicking healthcare standards and denying a targeted group of the healthcare benefits they’ve earned through their service and sacrifice. Comments in the press release pit the needs of some veterans against others.
