This is so true Nick Covington! The system itself was built during a time when there was very little understanding of how children develop and learn. Given what we now know, I would argue that our school systems are actually creating obstacles to optimal child development and learning. Human Restoration Project
Some folks in education apparently see changes made to school in the name of healthy human development as somehow detracting from the acquisition of academic content and skills. But these are shared and mutually sustaining goals. In a national survey of over 21,000 students, "tired", "stressed", and "bored" were the most common words students used to describe how they feel at school.?In an in-depth follow-up with 472 students, "75% of all feelings students reported...were negative." How well do we think tired, stressed, bored, anxious, annoyed, sad, lonely, and depressed kids learn at school? How could we both improve learning AND the experience of school if 75% of all reported feelings were *positive*, what would that take? What if we were responsive to this data in the same way we labor over and shift the system for test scores? ?? Recentering the structures and systems of school to support and sustain healthy human development *is* a path toward better learning AND growing better human beings! #restorehumanity https://lnkd.in/g9fwc9xN
