HRPI at Boston University Questrom School of Business was founded in the early eighties as a partnership between faculty and top-level human resources executives. HRPI holds semi-annual meetings during which members participate in sessions on leading-edge human resources topics as well as member roundtable discussion. The Institute also sponsors faculty and doctoral level research, develops case studies, conducts executive development programs and acts as an information resource for members through survey research and our newsletters. We hold two one and a half day meetings a year, in May and October. In addition, we offer a series of webinars throughout the year featuring guest speakers and member company best practices on key HR topics.

Congratulations to Nickle LaMoreaux of IBM, winner of the HR Executive of the Year award. It was an honor to host the award ceremony and to hear Nickle's remarks at our fireside chat as part of our HR Policy Institute fall meeting at the Questrom School of Business, Boston University.
What an incredibly special day as I officially accepted the award for 2024 HR Executive of the Year. Thank you again to HR Executive for the honor, and to Tracy Keogh for the wonderful fireside chat during the event. To my amazing leadership team who joined me, thanks for your unwavering support. And even though they weren’t there in person, I have to thank my family. Juggling personal commitments with a C-suite role isn’t always perfect, but we do it . . . together. Thanks also to my predecessor, Diane Gherson, for laying the #AI in HR foundation back in 2017, and to IBM Chairman and CEO Arvind Krishna, for being so supportive of our AI Client Zero work these past four years. This is a day, and a celebration, I’ll never forget! #HR #recognition

We are excited to share that HRPI Co-Director, Connie Noonan Hadley's new article: “We’re Still Lonely: It’s Time for Organizations to Take a New Approach” is featured as the cover piece in the November-December edition of Harvard Business Review! https://lnkd.in/ggwVW7Mf Overview: In recent years, the huge impact that work loneliness is having on healthcare costs, absenteeism, and turnover has received widespread attention. Despite growing awareness, the problem remains, with one in five employees worldwide feeling lonely at work. In this article, the authors debunk myths about work loneliness, such as the belief that in-person work or team assignments can solve the issue. They emphasize that loneliness is not just a personal problem but also an organizational one, influenced by the work environment. Practical actions that employers can take to reduce work loneliness include measuring loneliness, designing slack in workflows, creating a culture of connection, and building social activities into the rhythm of work.

Congratulations Nickle LaMoreaux. We look forward to celebrating you at the HR Policy Institute fall meeting later this month!
I am humbled and beyond honored to be named as the 2024 HR Executive of the Year from HR Executive. It’s not often that you join the ranks of such incredibly distinguished CHROs such as Cheryl Johnson (2023), Peter Fasolo, Ph.D. (2022), Kathleen Hogan (2021), Ellyn Shook (2020), David Rodriguez, PhD (2019), and my predecessor Diane Gherson (2018).?? ? When I began my career as an intern at IBM almost 25 years ago, I never thought I would wind up as CHRO. I did not get to this seat alone, and I did not win this award alone – there is an incredible team of hard working, innovative, creative, growth minded IBMers that I am sharing this with, and I’m so proud of them!?? ? At IBM, our purpose is “To be the catalyst that makes the world work better.” I see evidence of this in the work we do for our clients, our business and our communities every day.? ? Whether we’re transforming our own IBM HR processes with #AI and #hybridcloud, reskilling and upskilling to tackle new job roles, evolving the employee experience, or using #GenAI to create the next digital assistant for IBMers worldwide, there is nothing our IBM HR team can’t do.? ? So team, I’m dedicating this HR Executive of the Year Award to you . . . thank you for everything you do to make IBM an amazing place to work!?#proudIBMer

Stern Strategy Group features the work of HRPI co-director Connie Noonan Hadley, Questrom School of Business, Boston University.
Most people have a natural need for human connection, but when organizations adopt hybrid scheduling or implement AI tools, they risk creating a work environment that can feel devoid of human coworkers. ?? Connie Noonan Hadley, Ph.D., a Questrom School of Business, Boston University professor, and the founder and Chief Scientist of the Institute for Life at Work, is one of the world’s top authorities on loneliness and relationships, team effectiveness, and psychological safety, employee mental health and well-being, remote and hybrid work, burnout and trust – all the things companies need to address to create an environment where people are excited to work. ?? This year, Connie was named to the Thinkers50 Radar list where she was recognized as someone who “will make an impact with their ideas, their research, and their commitment to making the world a better place.” ?? A top researcher who is also the co-director of the Human Resources Policy Institute, her latest work takes a close look at how generative AI impacts employee experience and the effect of AI adoption on team innovation. HRPI Co-Director Connie Noonan Hadley wrote an article featured in Harvard Business Review with co-authors Hooria Jazaieri, and Hillary Anger Elfenbein on ways managers can support employees with Bipolar disorder. “Whether leaders know it or not, chances are their workforce contains people with bipolar disorder. This article discusses three measures that organizations can take to bring out the best in employees with this condition: modifying job features, training managers to support them, and promoting a culture of performance and compassion." https://lnkd.in/eRgy4-d9 Questrom School of Business, Boston University

HRPI Co-Director Connie Noonan Hadley on trust in business.
Are you a "trust is broken" or "trust is earned" kind of person? I am the former, which means I tend to assume people and entities are trustworthy until proven otherwise. I understand why others take the opposite approach as well, scrutinizing words and behaviors to determine if someone or something can be trusted. No one likes to be fooled or exploited. No matter how you assess it, trust is a big deal in organizational life. Internally, it can determine important outcomes like job satisfaction, well-being, and performance. Externally, it can impact market share, financial value, and recruiting. In this webinar hosted by the Harvard Business Review Analytic Services and sponsored by Questrom School of Business, Boston University, I join my colleagues Marshall Van Alstyne and Shuba Srinivasan to discuss the nature of trust and misinformation in today's world. I learned a great deal from Marshall and Shuba about ways companies and individuals can earn trust -- and how to protect themselves from misinformation and acts of distrust. The video is free without an HBR subscription; click the link in the article.
