Last week, Human Impact Partners (HIP) Health Instead of Punishment Program Director Christine Mitchell joined public health practitioners, formerly incarcerated organizers, and advocates with the FreeHer Campaign at the Vermont statehouse for the Voices for Health, Not Incarceration Press Conference on Public Health and Prison Moratorium to voice support for VT Bill H.456, sponsored by Rep. Brian Cina, to prevent the construction of new prisons and divert funds to health-supporting community services. "Incarceration is immensely harmful to health, and we need to be working towards a world without it. Research is clear that the experience of incarceration is correlated with so many poor health outcomes...We know that our communities are safer and healthier when the state invests in the social determinants of health." - Christine Mitchell https://lnkd.in/gUtP8fjC #HealthNotPunishment

"There is no better teacher than adversity. Every defeat, every heartbreak, every loss, contains its own seed, its own lesson on how to improve your performance next time." - Malcolm X Today we're feeling inspired by this 1963 picture of Gloria Richardson dismissing an armed National Guardsmen in her home of Cambridge, Md., encapsulating her determination to not back down while protesting racial inequality.?(Source: Because of Them We Can) While it is certain that this would have been a terrifying scene, we simply have no choice but to stan. As our adversaries become increasingly brazen, it is not lost on us that choosing to be on the right side of history will also put us on Mrs. Richardson’s side of the bayonet. The specifics of the siege we now find ourselves under may be unique, but we're careful to recall that precedent abounds for the broader challenges we face — and that there are countless examples of determination, bravery, fortitude, and strength, that we may look to in our refusal to accept inequality and injustice.

"We know that our communities are safer and healthier when the state invests in the things we need to survive — housing, healthcare, education, transportation — and not into constructing more prisons and jails...We know — and research supports — incarceration cannot and should not be the primary point of care for our loved ones. This is basic public health."? — Human Impact Partners (HIP) Health Instead of Punishment Program Director Christine Mitchell Public health workers and advocates are calling for and end to the construction of a new women's prison in Vermont, emphasizing the need for trauma-informed approaches that support public health, healing, recovery, and prevention rather than punishment and confinement. https://lnkd.in/g7CxJmM2

“True public health means confronting the root causes of harm, and that includes corporate polluters who have profited from harming our environment, our communities, and our health." - HIP Co-Director Solange Gould on the NEW groundbreaking #PollutersPay Climate Superfund Act. #AB1243 and #SB684 by Assemblymember Dawn Addis and Senator Caroline Menjivar will hold Big Oil accountable for the damage they’ve caused and bring major investments to our communities. ?? Tell CA lawmakers: MAKE POLLUTERS PAY. https://lnkd.in/gKJvSTg9 If lawmakers don’t act, California taxpayers will continue to be stuck with enormous cleanup bills for the climate destruction Big Oil helped create. Estimated damages from the LA fires alone are over $250 billion. Let’s be clear: Oil CEOs got rich, and now they want you to pay for the damage their pollution has caused. #SB684 #AB1243 #WevePaidEnough #MakePollutersPay #InvestInCommunities
