As our adversaries become increasingly brazen, it is not lost on us that choosing to be on the right side of history will also put us on Mrs. Richardson’s side of the bayonet. The specifics of the siege we now find ourselves under may be unique, but we're careful to recall that precedent abounds for the broader challenges we face — and that there are countless examples of determination, bravery, fortitude, and strength, that we may look to in our refusal to accept inequality and injustice.

Extreme climate disasters are destroying California. The recent wildfires in Southern California are set to be the costliest fire in U.S. history, taking at least 29 lives, burning nearly 17,000 structures, including homes and businesses, and driving 180,000 residents out of their homes. Big Oil has put corporate profits ahead of California neighborhoods for too long by ignoring their own climate science and continuing to pollute. And we’re all bearing the costs of their greed. We must hold these corporate polluters accountable for the climate crisis they created. It’s time to make them pay for the climate-fueled disasters they caused. Over a decade ago, I was part of a team with James (Jim) Cavallaro Maria Luisa Romero Atenas Burrola Alexandra Miller that documented the horrific conditions inside Panama’s prisons, where people caught up in the criminal system were held in overcrowded, unsanitary, and often violent conditions. The U.S. played a role in growing the carceral system in the region, pressuring governments across Latin America to detain and deter migrants rather than providing real safety and stability. https://lnkd.in/gyrEQPHp Now, reports indicate that the U.S. is considering sending citizens and non-citizens to be incarcerated in El Salvador—an even more extreme version of the same failed logic. https://lnkd.in/gRPRARMK We know what happens when governments outsource punishment. I’ve seen firsthand the brutal consequences of detention policies shaped by U.S. influence—people locked away indefinitely, denied medical care, subjected to violence and neglect. Today, under El Salvador’s state of emergency, tens of thousands have been arbitrarily detained, many forcibly disappeared or dying in custody. The U.S. knows this. https://lnkd.in/gKEfuA8S Mass incarceration is a public health disaster. It does not create safety—it creates harm. And offshoring punishment does not absolve the U.S. of responsibility. Instead of expanding carceral systems, we need to invest in the things that actually make communities safer: housing, healthcare, and economic security. We’ve seen this before.
