This month we are highlighting World Prematurity Day. Did you know that 1-10 babies are born prematurely? The March of Dimes – MOD has given the United States a D+ grade for premature births in the March of Dimes Report Card due to the alarmingly high preterm birth rate. Preterm births occur for a variety of reasons. According to WHO most preterm births happen spontaneously, but some are due to medical reasons such as infections, and chronic conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure; however, often no cause is identified. A baby’s movements are an important sign of their wellbeing in the 3rd trimester. Learn more about fetal movement with Count the Kicks here: https://spr.ly/6042Scvt4 Please tune in below for the monthly message from our Executive Director for Maternal Health, Rose L. Horton, MSM, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN #NotOnMyWatch #WorldPrematurityDay

This month we highlight Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Awareness. Did you know that sudden infant death is the leading cause of death for infants between one - four months of age in the United States? The number of deaths has decreased significantly since the launch of the Safe Sleep initiative in 1994. When infants are placed on their stomachs to sleep, overheating can occur. They also rebreathe exhaled air which has more carbon dioxide and less oxygen causing too little oxygen in the infant's body. Temporary changes in the heart and lung function could affect the amount of oxygen getting to the brain. What does safe sleep look like? Placing the infant on their back, on a firm, flat and level surface. It isn't recommended to use any crib bumpers, blankets or soft toys in the infant sleep space. Please check this link for additional information on Sudden Infant Death Awareness and prevention: https://spr.ly/6046UpsqK Please tune in below for the monthly message from our Executive Director for Maternal Health, Rose L. Horton, MSM, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN #NotOnMyWatch #SIDSawarenessMonth #SafeSleep #SIDS
