It's #NewbornScreeningAwareness Month! Newborn screening is a public health service for the ~ 4million babies born in the US each year. The screening occurs within 1 to 2 days of birth and will test for over 29 diseases. The goal of #newbornscreening tests is for early detection and intervention. It is important to note that about 1 in 4 babies are born with a critical congenital heart defect. It is estimated that 6,000 babies are born in the U.S. with hearing outside the typical range. The World Health Organization (WHO) has a global target to increase breastfeeding rates to 50% by 2025. Breastfeeding has many benefits for the infant and mother. Human milk has everything a newborn needs, including micro and macronutrients, immunoglobulins, hormones, stem cells, growth factors, antimicrobial agents, immune cells, cytokines, and prebiotic bacteria. Many hospitals have embraced the 10 steps to successful breastfeeding.
