  • In the month of March we celebrate and highlight Women's History. This month was first recognized in 1982 and since then has been certified by every sitting U.S. president. The contributions of women are storied, fascinating and vast. I choose to focus on my mother and her contributions. As a single parent of 4 children, she made the courageous decision to leave our country of birth to travel to the United States. She wanted her children to grow up in a country that afforded them more opportunity and to that end, left her children with family and for 3 years, worked hard to learn the language, secure a job, find a place to live and save her money to bring her children to the U.S. Because of her, I am! All of our accomplishments, contributions, our beautiful families, everything is relegated to my mother. Take a moment during the month of March to celebrate and thank the women who have poured into you. Learn more about Women's History Month here: https://spr.ly/60420OXPG Rose L. February is American Heart Month. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. It is important to note that heart disease is also largely preventable. Here are 10 ways to take action for your heart and mitigate heart disease: - Get enough sleep - Eat a nutrient dense diet with colorful fruit and veggies, nuts, and grains - Maintain a healthy weight - Get 2.5 hours of physical activity per week - Stop smoking - Control your cholesterol - Manage your blood sugar - Manage stress - Control your blood pressure - Practice self-care The symptoms of a heart attack are different for women than men. Women typically experience: - Pain in shoulder, back or arm - Shortness of breath - Significant and unusual tiredness and weakness - Upset stomach - Anxiety These symptoms can happen together with chest pain or without any chest pain, it is vitally important to get treatment right away and do not downplay these symptoms. • Maternal Health Awareness Day on January 23rd reminds us of the growing maternal health crisis in the U.S., where maternal morbidity and mortality have been rising for over 20 years - 84% of which is preventable. This year's theme, "Know What's at Stake," highlights the need for equity, accountability, freedom, and community action. Inspired by New Jersey's progress, we must raise awareness, share resources, and demand change to protect mothers everywhere. Thank you to partners like Nurture NJ (https://spr.ly/6049aXV1X) & American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) (https://spr.ly/6040aXV1k) for driving this important work. • “It’s the most wonderful time of the year” We hear this adage often during this time of year. For many years it was thought that there were higher rates of suicide during this time of year. I am happy to report that there is no data to support this. Based on a study from the Annenberg Public Policy center, suicides do not increase during this time of year. Read more here: https://spr.ly/6047Q5Zfd I want to highlight gratitude this month. During this season we are so busy shopping, decorating, cooking, attending holiday parties, spending time with the family, and all of it may feel overwhelming. A great way to combat the stress of the holidays is to hold space for gratitude. Did you know that centering gratitude helps to reduce depression, lessen anxiety, supports heart health and improves sleep? UCLA Health outlines many of the benefits of gratitude. Read more here: https://spr.ly/6048Q5Zfe I encourage you to take a moment at bedtime or first thing in the morning to write down 3 things you’re grateful for. Do this for at least 30 days, and before you know it, it will become a new, healthy habit. It is the most wonderful time of the year, and I am grateful for all of you and my lovely partner, Huggies Healthcare. • This month we are highlighting World Prematurity Day. Did you know that 1-10 babies are born prematurely? The March of Dimes – MOD has given the United States a D+ grade for premature births in the March of Dimes Report Card due to the alarmingly high preterm birth rate. Preterm births occur for a variety of reasons. According to WHO most preterm births happen spontaneously, but some are due to medical reasons such as infections, and chronic conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure; however, often no cause is identified. A baby’s movements are an important sign of their wellbeing in the 3rd trimester.
