Preserving and interpreting the maritime history of the Hudson River, its tributaries, and related industries.

关于我们

Located on the historic Rondout waterfront, the Hudson River Maritime Museum was established in 1979 and is dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of the maritime history of the Hudson River, its tributaries, and related industries. The museum's collections include historic vessels, objects, archival material and art related to Hudson River transportation, industries and recreation such as paintings, prints, photographs, ephemera, blueprints, artifacts, ship models, a 100-year old shad boat, life boats, lighthouse tender and ice yachts. The maritime heritage of the Hudson River encompasses industries such as ice harvesting, brick making, boat building, blue stone quarrying, cement making, coal transport, and crushed stone. The steam era of transportation, which stimulated the growth of these various industries on the Hudson River, is emphasized, and the 19th and 20th centuries are the primary time periods interpreted. The Hudson River Maritime Museum shares its knowledge, research, and collections through public events, lectures, education programs and activities, exhibitions, and publications.

  • US Sailing Certified Basic Keelboat Instructor, Cristina Cerroni joins RWSC's conference line up leading a workshop on Basic Navigation. Despite growing up on Long Island Sound, Cristina didn't start sailing until adulthood. The spark to sail was ignited by watching races in New York Harbor, and after taking an introduction to sailing class, she couldn't stay away, navigating under sail as often as she could. She learned to sail on J24s and has been a crew member of the 12 Meter America II 42 and 46. Cristina is excited to share her love of sailing with others this conference and hopes more people discover the magic of sailing. • Our popular Follow The River series returns this Wednesday, March 19th with novelist Marilyn Higgins as she discusses the life of Aileen O'Malley, an Irish Immigrant in search of her father and kidnapped siblings, during the height of American abolitionism. Her novel is titled, "Dreams of Freedom". Marilyn Higgins has spent her life loving and working in the cities, small towns and places of extraordinary natural beauty that comprise upstate New York. Her passion for the area’s rich history and belief in its profound impact on America’s national identity motivated her to write “Dreams of Freedom.” As the chief economic development officer for National Grid (Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation) and later Syracuse University, she was told intriguing stories and saw the mysterious artifacts of upstate New York’s Erie Canal communities. Her fascination with these places, where new religions were born and waves of immigrants, abolitionism, women’s rights and Haudenosaunee culture entwined in the 19th century continues. A twenty-year volunteer with the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, she is currently working with the National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum and her home community of Canastota, New York to promote the “Abolitionist Freedom Walk,” a public reenactment of the storied 1835 canal journey and march of 104 abolitionists up a steep nine-mile embankment to the Hamlet of Peterboro to form the New York Anti-Slavery Society. Imagining the life of a young Irish woman in search of her lost family along the Erie Canal at a time when the area was a hotbed of dissent and the critical last-leg of escape on the underground railroad, energized her in the writing of this novel. • Towing on the Hudson River undoubtedly began in earnest with the earliest steamboats once the Erie Canal began at the time of its grand opening on 26 October 1825. After that date, canal boats loaded with eastbound grain cargoes needed a way to deliver their cargoes to New York City. Nearly all of the towboats of that age were primarily side-wheel steamers which normally carried passengers. Little is known of how the concept of the dedicated towboat developed. As the traffic on the Canal increased, it was undoubtedly found that there was more traffic than could be handled by the passenger boats. It is surmised that this occurred sometime during the mid-to-late 1830s. It should be noted that the marine propeller did not exist at this time, so that all of this earliest towing was carried out by side-wheel steamboats.
