The Trust is a public benefit corporation created by act of the New York State Legislature and a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. The mission of the Trust is to design, construct and maintain a prominent, and very heavily used, 4 mile long waterfront park on the west side of Manhattan. The Park includes landscaped public piers and display gardens, lawn areas, ecological planting zones, athletic fields, esplanades, docks, public sculptures and other special features. Also located within the Park are several commercial facilities, including the Pier 40 parking garage, Pier 57, Circle Line excursion piers and Chelsea Piers. The Trust covers its $18.5 million annual operating budget through parking revenue, rents, permits, fees, grants, donations generated by a “Friends” organization and other private sources. Approximately 73% of the Park has been constructed with a mix of State, City and Federal capital funding. Total investment in all facilities within the Park is approximately $583 million.

While cities contribute positively to the environment by reducing urban sprawl and enhancing public transportation, they can create localized heat islands due to the concentration of buildings and human activities. For instance, a New York City block feels, on average, nearly 10 degrees hotter than a nearby rural area would, according to research nonprofit Climate Central, Inc. One of the best ways to mitigate heat island effect is through effective and creative use of rooftops. From solar panels, found on the roof of The Exchange at Larkspur Center in California, to green roofs like the one at Pier 57 in New York, these strategies help to reduce overall temperatures. Solar panels not only cool buildings by absorbing sunlight but also generate clean energy, while green roofs provide insulation and reduce surface temperatures through vegetation. These measures, combined with urban forests and increased green spaces, create sustainable urban environments that balance the benefits of densification with the need for cooler, more comfortable city living. For more on how the green roof at Pier 57 helps combat urban heat island effect, see the story from abc7NY: https://lnkd.in/eAZj2tUV #commercialrealeastate #CRE #Sustainability #UrbanPlanning

Climate Science | Clean Water | STEM Communications | Mentorship | VP of Estuary & Education at Hudson River Park's River Project
What an enriching few days at Restore America's Estuaries 2024 Coastal & Estuarine Summit! I presented on Monday at the "Innovation in Restoration" session on behalf of Hudson River Park Trust and shared learnings from our habitat enhancement work and exploration of newer video, sonar and eDNA methods being trialed at our Gansevoort Peninsula Site. Our panel showcased living shoreline projects and research from the Gulf of Mexico to the North Atlantic emphasizing the community and ecological benefits that restoration projects can offer and the learnings that can translate across state and national lines. I especially enjoyed the many wonderful panels and conversations that unfolded with old and new partners alike. Siddhartha Hayes and I also contributed a research poster sharing how the Park's WasteShark supplements shoreline cleanups and helps removes in-water plastic debris before it breaks down on our coasts. There were a number of other posters focused on the presence and impacts of plastics as a reminder that we're still in the early stages of understanding how plastics persist and influence the health of our environments, bodies and communities. We also celebrated the work of Park research partners and students who have extended the Park's research capacity and helped us explore new questions about the health of our estuarine waters and wildlife. Thank you Lesley Baggett, Ph.D. for sharing on our three years of research at our Tribeca Habitat Enhancement site and Allison Fitzgerald for collaborating on oyster research for over the last decade+. Your New Jersey City University students' projects were the product of many muddy field days and a lasting partnership! Big congratulations to each of them for presenting their posters at RAE!
