190 million. That’s the estimated INDIVIDUAL number of medical records affected. The number is so large that it kinda doesn’t even register. Now medical records are deemed SO sensitive that the US government actually has a dedicated privacy and cybersecurity framework to protect them. It’s called HIPPA. Here’s the TLDR: In February 2024, UnitedHealth Groups subsidiary, Change Healthcare, suffered a significant cyberattack due to the absence of multi-factor authentication (MFA) on their Citrix remote access portal, allowing attackers to infiltrate the system using stolen credentials. Implementing MFA, a security measure that requires users to provide multiple forms of verification before accessing a system, could have prevented this breach. Even platforms like Netflix have recognized the importance of MFA, offering it to their partners to enhance account security. Additionally, regular vulnerability scanning is crucial in identifying and addressing security weaknesses, thereby preventing malware, including ransomware, from taking hold. This incident underscores the critical importance of adhering to HIPAAs’ security provisions, including the implementation of MFA and regular vulnerability assessments, to protect sensitive health information from unauthorized access and potential misuse. Now, United Healthcare is a huge company with entire office floors of attorneys and relationships with government. If you’re a smaller medical or dental office, you don’t have those sort of resources or influence. For those smaller medical businesses (which are the overwhelming majority) this would be an extinction level event. The increased number, sophistication and third party exposure to cyberattacks demand the small and modsized businesses deploy automated solutions that go beyond simple - and evadable - anti-virus solutions.
