A day in the life of Huckleberry's Create 2 Activate Coordinator, Taylor, and our Director of Health Services, Keana! They attended a conference yesterday that enhanced their knowledge and skills in youth-led storytelling, prevention messaging and promoting local youth-led civic engagement efforts around substance use. Create 2 Activate is an 8-week program centering creative expression and harm reduction advocacy among youth ages 15-24. Trainings like the Elevate Youth Conference are crucial for meeting our youth where they are in our communities. ?????? ? #HarmReduction

For the second consecutive year, our wonderful friends at Toast?have helped us meet the basic needs of our youth through the donation of essential food items. TOAST employees assembled extremely generous food bags last week for our youth and families. One hundred bags were distributed to youth and families engaged in our HART?program for commercially sexually exploited youth. Thank you to our friends at TOAST for this lovely holiday gift for our young people. #gratitude

Earlier this month, our Huckleberry ACE (Access to College Equity) Academy students attended Sacramento State's Fall Campus Preview "Future Hornet Day." The trip provided prospective students an opportunity to experience and explore the campus, tour housing, learn about academic programs by talking to department representatives, and discover campus resources. College campus tours are an important component of ACE Academy programming, along with career exploration, financial aid navigation, personal essay writing support, and college information workshops. #sacstate #sacramentostate #sacramentostateuniversity #futurehornet #collegeaccess

November is National Youth Homelessness, Outreach, Prevention & Education (HOPE) Month! Annually, 4.2 million young people in the U.S. (ages 13-25) experience homelessness. Last year, Huckleberry House our runaway youth and crisis shelter in San Francisco, hosted an increased number of youth from surrounding Bay Area Counties. With the closure of two youth shelters in one year (one in San Mateo & one in Oakland), Huckleberry House is ONE OF ONLY THREE operating emergency youth shelters in the entire Bay Area region. Huckleberry House meets the basic needs of unhoused and unstably housed youth by providing: ?? Shelter ?? Food ?? A Safety Plan ?? Clothing ?? Transportation ?? Hygiene supplies (e.g., deodorant, soap, oral hygiene, hand sanitizer, menstrual supplies) ?? Access to Harm reduction supplies (e.g., health education, safer sex, overdose prevention supplies) ?? Last week, our Huckleberry Advocacy & Response Team (HART) was out and about educating the community and helping to prevent commercial sexual exploitation of children. The team provided a training entitled, “Strategies To Engage Youth Who Are At Risk Or Have Been Exploited” for San Francisco Unified School District nurses. Also, the team attended the San Francisco Collaborative Against Human Trafficking 2024 Annual Conference: Innovative Anti-Trafficking Strategies.
